JP Nobre is a mechanical engineer specialising in residual stress analysis and mechanical behaviour of materials. He began his research career at ISMCM (SupMeca), France, in the field of Contact Mechanics and Tribology, under the supervision of Prof. R. Gras. After completing his MSc at the University of Coimbra in 1996, he initiated a new research line at CFisUC – Centre of Physics of the University of Coimbra, on mechanical methods for residual stress measurement, particularly the incremental hole-drilling technique (IHD), to complement existing X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. Following research training at the Institute of Materials Engineering (IfW), University of Kassel, Germany, with Prof. B. Scholtes, he completed his PhD in 2001. Since 2007, he has served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Coimbra and as a researcher at CFisUC. From 2013 to 2023, he was also Associate Professor of Mechanical Design at WITS University (MIA School), South Africa, where he led the Design and Mechatronics Stream and served as Visiting and Honorary Professor. His main research areas include the development and application of residual stress measurement techniques and the influence of residual stresses on the mechanical behaviour of materials. He has worked on the characterisation of work-hardened surface layers in metallic alloys. More recently, his focus has expanded to improving drilling processes in difficult-to-machine materials and adapting the IHD technique for residual stress assessment in polymer matrix composites (e.g., CFRP, GFRP) and fibre-metal laminates, particularly addressing stress singularities at material interfaces—structures increasingly relevant in aerospace engineering. His current research also explores hybrid manufacturing technologies and the evaluation of residual stresses in advanced manufacturing processes. Over the course of his career, JP Nobre has been awarded more than ten research grants across several countries, including France, Germany, South Africa, and Portugal. In 2000, supported by a DAAD grant, he contributed to the project “Residual Stress Development and Fatigue Behaviour of Surface-Treated Magnesium Alloys” at the University of Kassel. He has held invited academic positions at ENSAM (France) in Angers (2006), focusing on fatigue design improvement of mechanically treated components, and in Cluny (2014), working on the optimisation of drilling processes for difficult-to-machine aeronautical materials, particularly titanium alloys. In 2010, during a sabbatical year, he served as an invited researcher in the DFG-funded Transregional Collaborative Research Centre SFB/TR TRR 30, which developed process-integrated manufacturing techniques to produce functionally graded structures through thermomechanical methods. His collaborative work on residual stress analysis in composite laminates—carried out in partnership with Prof. W. Van Paepegem (Ghent University)—was recognised with an award at the 8th European Conference on Residual Stresses (ECRS8, Italy, 2010). In 2015, he was recognised as a rated researcher by the South African NRF. In 2017, he launched an international research collaboration on additive manufacturing of titanium alloys, involving CSIR (SA), Aerosud (SA), MIA-WITS (SA), CFisUC (Coimbra), TUM (Munich), and KIT (Karlsruhe). In 2018, he was invited to contribute to a new DFG-funded project at the University of Kassel (Prof. T. Niendorf) on the analysis and evaluation of residual stresses in intrinsically manufactured hybrid composites. He has contributed to several industry-linked projects and has supervised numerous undergraduate and postgraduate students across Portugal, Germany, and South Africa. He is the author of over 50 peer-reviewed publications, most as first author. Since 2014, he has served on the Scientific Committee of the European Group on Residual Stresses (ECRS), representing its Mechanical Methods.
