JP Nobre began his research career at ISMCM (SupMeca), France, under the supervision of the former Professor Rene Gras, in the field of Contact Mechanics and Tribology. In 1996, he concluded his MSc thesis in Mechanical Engineering Sciences, by the University of Coimbra. Subsequently, by suggestion of his supervisor, Professor A. Morão Dias, it was decided to open a new research area, related to residual stress measurements techniques, especially the incremental hole-drilling technique (IHD), to complement the advanced analysis already carried out using X-ray diffraction (XRD) in his lab. After the training and research performed at Institute of Materials Engineering (IfW) of the Kassel University, Germany, under the supervision of Professor Berthold Scholtes, in 2001, he finished his PhD, winning a tenure position at University of Coimbra, in 2007, as Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering Design. During his career he has received more than ten grants in different countries, such as France, Germany, South Africa and Portugal. In 2006 (Angers) and 2014 (Cluny) he worked as invited Professor at ENSAM (ParisTech). In 2010, during a sabbatical year, he worked as invited researcher (DFG - Transregional Collaborative Research Centre SFB/ TR TRR 30) at Institute of Materials Engineering (IfW) of the Kassel University, Germany. His work performed in Germany related with residual stresses in composite laminates, performed in colaboration with Prof. Wim van Paepegem from Ghent University, Belgium, was awarded during the ECRS8 conference, held in Italy in July 2010. Since 2013, he has been Visiting Associate Professor at WITS University (South Africa), being rated researcher by the National Research Foundation (NRF). The development of residual stress measurement techniques and the study of its effect on the materials’ mechanical behaviour were always main research areas. His last research interests are related whit the improvement of drilling operations in difficult-to-machine materials and with the development of the IHD technique for measuring residual stresses in polymer matrix composites (e.g., CFRP, GFRP) and fibre-metal laminates, nowadays widely used in aeronautical and aerospace industries. In this context, in 2018, he was invited to work in a new German project (DFG - Analyse und Bewertung von Eigenspannungen in intrinsisch gefertigten Kunststoff-Metall-Schichtverbunden) launched by the Kassel University (Prof. Thomas Niendorf). In 2017, he launched a new international research collaboration in the area of additive manufacturing (CSIR, Aerosud, Wits (MIA), Coimbra (CFisUC), Munich (TUM) and Karlsruhe (KIT)). He has a large experience in supervising undergratute and postgraduate studies in Portugal, Germany and South Africa, having more than fifty peer reviewed published research documents, almost all of them as first author. J.P. Nobre was elected member of the scientific committee of European Group on Residual Stresses (ECRS), being his representant for the Mechanical Methods since 2014.

Este trabalho foi realizado em colaboração com o Instituto Politécnico de Leiria (Prof. Dr. Carlos Capela) e com o Insituto Politécnico de Castelo Branco (Prof. Dr. Marcelo Gaspar). Trabalho realizado em 2004-2005.
2001/02/01 - 2001/04/01 Prestou serviço de consultoria à empresa Revigrés, SA, Porto. Empresa da indústria cerâmica. Trabalho essencialmente experimental que incidiu sobre a determinação de tensões residuais induzidas durante o fabrico de placas de grês-porcelâmico, através da técnica do furo incremental. Trabalho realizado em 2001.
