Olga Kaczerewska is a chemistry graduate (2013) from Faculty of Chemistry, Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (Poland) where she was awarded a PhD degree (2017). Her doctoral dissertation “Corrosion inhibition efficiency of functionalized dimeric tetraalkylammonium salts” was prepared under the supervision of Prof. B. Brycki. Dr. Kaczerewska dedicated her research to cationic surfactants, with major in dimeric quaternary ammonium salts (gemini surfactants). She started as an organic chemist focusing on developing new compounds but international internships during PhD studies allowed her to gain experience in other areas. In 2015 the applicant carried out research at the Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, Department of Chemical and Surfactants Technology (Barcelona, Spain) where she studied aggregation behaviour, biodegradation and aquatic toxicity of gemini surfactants. During her research stay at University of Manchester (2016) she learnt the fundamentals of corrosion protection and tested gemini surfactants as corrosion inhibitors in acidic environment. Both research stays were an inseparable part of her interdisciplinary doctoral dissertation. After completing her PhD, Dr. Kaczerewska gained industrial experience working in Procter&Gamble Brussels Innovation Center. Her work involved surfactants, improved significantly a product effectiveness and resulted in one European patent application (18174033.3-1105). In 2018, Dr. Kaczerewska was awarded a Marie Curie Individual Fellowship (H2020-MSCA-IF-2017) and in September 2018 started a project (EcoGemCoat, 792945) entitled “Smart anticorrosion coatings based on nanocontainers loaded with novel, eco-friendly cationic gemini surfactants as efficient corrosion inhibitors for carbon steel in seawater”. The project is being run at CICECO by Dr. Kaczerewska under supervision of Prof. J. Tedim (SECOP group, DEMaC-UA). EcoGemCoat explores an active corrosion protection, interdisciplinary skills, involves a national (Department of Biology, UA) and an international (University of Manchester) collaboration, and aims at developing innovative and eco-friendly solutions for anticorrosive coatings. All the experience and ease of exploring new disciplines /from organic chemistry to materials science/ makes her a promising researcher in CICECO. So far, Dr. Kaczerewska (h-index of 5) published 7 research papers (others in preparation) and is a co-author of 2 book chapters. Since 2013 she has gained teaching (organic chemistry (Poland, 2013-2017); materials characterization (Portugal, 2019-now) and supervising (2 master students and 4 incoming Erasmus+ students) experience. The applicant is also involved in science communication activities to general audiences, namely, being project manager for Polish in Portugal at Native Scientist and science project leader during ArtLab 2019 in Viseu (organized by Science Xplore), and participating at Science is Wonderful! exhibition (organized by European Commission).
