Mónica Alexandra Basto de Almeida e Silva

Mónica Alexandra Basto de Almeida e Silva has achieved her First Degree on Chemistry in 1996 at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto, Portugal, and subsequently obtained Master and Ph.D. on Chemical Engineering achieved in 2002 at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, Portugal. After these degrees, she was invited to be a Full Teacher of Biophysics and Physical Chemistry for a period of 3-years at Cooperativa de Ensino Superior e Particular Universitário, Gandra, Portugal. In the end of the contract, Dr Silva decided to return to the scientific research. This was the first gap in her scientific research. In 2008, Dr Silva get a fellowship/award from the Foundation for Science and Technology, an organization within the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education in Portugal, to do research activies as post-doctoral at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, Portugal, and the Université Blaise-Pascal II, Clermont-Ferrand, France. During this period, Dr Silva developed photocatalysts based in organometallic molecules (porphyrins and phthalocyanines) supported in aluminosilicates. They showed chemical and mechanical stability, good adsorptive properties and promising photodegradative abilities over some pollutants (dyes, pesticides and pharmaceuticals). Publications in the Journal of Hazardous Materials, RSC Advances, Dalton Transitions and Chemical Reviews were attained. In the academic years 2011/2012 and 2012/2013, Dr Silva was invited to give lectures of Analytical Chemistry to students of the Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry Courses, and lectures of Heterogeneous Catalysis to Master students of the same courses. Additionally, she co-supervise two Master thesis and one Erasmus project. Dr Silva was member at partial-time of projects headed by her colleagues. After this experience, Dr Silva went to the University of Porto to work as contracted reseracher in a NORTE2020’s project, which involved microencapsulation of fragances and other therapeutic molecules for the functionalization of textile fibers (stimulus-sensitive materials). After that, other instituions were part of her portfolio. In the University of Aveiro, she done CORK-polymer composites (TPU matrix) to automobile industry by additive manufacturing techniques; at the University of Minho, she developed films cellulose-based for wastewater remediation. At the University of Évora, she made molecularly imprinted polymers for electrochemical sensors development to be used as detectors of pollutants in olive oil samples. Finally, at the Trinity College Dublin she has been doing the synthesis of cellulose aerogels with application in the energy sector. Dr Silva is a persuasive and motivated person with experience and skills, such as: (i) organocomplexes, zeolites and polymers synthesis; (ii) chemical and mechanical functionalization; (iii) chemical, physical and mechanical characterization; (iv) dissemination and communication (writing papers, participating on conferences, revising manuscripts for peer-review journals, giving lectures and co-orientating).
