Sara Marques is currently a guest assistant professor of Veterinary Toxicology from the Integrated Master of Veterinary Medicine at ICBAS-UP teaching practical classes since 2012. She was a Junior Researcher at CIBIO-InBIO-UP/ BIOPOLIS-UP from 2019 to 2025. Her major interests are infectious diseases, zoonosis, microbiology, molecular biology, phylogeny, proteomics, bioinformatics, virology, veterinary public health and veterinary toxicology. Her main investigation focus has been on Prototheca toxicity assays in different models (e.g. cellular cultures) and susceptibility to different antimicrobial agents. She has been widening her knowledge in veterinary public health and participating in several projects (e.g.): A pilot study to develop a surveillance system for companion animals, antimicrobial stewardship in an University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (UPVet), Veterinary Shelter Medicine – Characterization of Animal Shelters in Portugal,… Over the last years, she was a Pos Doc on the genotyping variability and identification of virulence markers of the potential zoonotic green alga Prototheca in CIBIO-InBIO-UP/ICETA and ICBAS-UP. She concluded her PhD in Veterinary Sciences at ICBAS-UP, in Prototheca characterization and pathogenesis in 2011. She concluded her degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2004 at ICBAS-UP. She has published more than 20 papers in international peer reviewed (ISI) journals, 1 book chapter, more than 20 proceedings, and participated in the organization of two scientific events.
