Miguel Mesquita Duarte holds a PhD in Contemporary Art History and is a Scientific Committee and Research Group Member of the Institute of Art History, Universidade NOVA de Lisboa (IHA/FCSH/NOVA). Duarte's research focuses on the operative role of visual archives in art and art history and on the status of documentary cinema as an alternative way of writing the history of traumatic events. Making use of a multi-disciplinary approach that intersects the fields of art history, philosophy of time, psychoanalysis, and cinema studies, his work addresses the screening of memory, the intersection of collective and personal history, the understanding of archival practices as expanded filmic devices, and the migration of images on a global scale. He is the author of the book Imagem de Arquivo e Tempo Mnemotécnico. Covilhã: LabCom.IFP Books, 2018. He has been publishing regularly since 2014 in international scientific journals with referees and with indexation in SCOPUS, Web of Science and ERIH Plus. His articles feature in key international journals of the area of specialization, such as Photographies, Studies in Documentary Film, Quarterly Review of Film and Video, Philosophy of Photography, RIHA Journal, Aniki: Portuguese Journal of the Moving Image, and Doc On-Line: Digital Magazine On Documentary Cinema. Duarte delivered several conference papers in Film Studies, Photography and Art History at national and international conferences and has lectured on Photography in the MA course of Art History at FCSH/NOVA. He took part in editorial boards of international scientific journals and has participated in organising scientific events as a member of IHA/FCSH/NOVA and in collaboration with other R&D Units. Duarte also develops research-based practices in video and photography, presenting his work in specialized journals (Photographies, 2022; [in]Transition: Journal of Videographic Film and Moving Image Studies, 2019; 2021) and international group exhibitions (award-winning finalist in PhotoEspaña Discovery Award, 2011-2012, and Encontros da Imagem de Braga, 2015).
