Médico internista com 22 anos de experiência clínica vividos em hospital terciário universitário - referência para região com mais de 8 milhões de habitantes no estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Atuou como coordenador técnico da Unidade de Emergência Referenciada do mesmo hospital, supervisionando diretamente as atividades clínicas em enfermaria de retaguarda do pronto socorro, unidade de terapia intensiva e pronto socorro. Pioneiro na implementação de metodologias ativas de ensino na Faculdade de Ciências Médicas da Unicamp onde projetou e implementou o laboratório de simulação realística, desenvolveu uma plataforma de ensino à distância voltada ao desenvolvimento de raciocínio clínico e implementou atividades pedagógicas conectadas com o ensino de humanidades para dar suporte à formação da identidade profissional de alunos de graduação e internos. Estas atividades de inovação exigiram constante diálogo multidisciplinar não somente com as profissões da área da saúde, mas também com profissionais do Instituto de Computação, Faculdade de Pedagogia e Instituto de Artes da mesma universidade. No âmbito do internato médico, participou ativamente da idealização e implementação do programa de internato de acesso direto em Medicina de Emergência em parceria com o Câmara Técnica de Urgência e Emergência do Conselho Federal de Medicina e com o Ministério da Saúde do Brasil, além de participar da redefinição das competências clínicas esperadas do especialista em medicina interna feita pela Câmara Técnica de Clínica Médica do mesmo Conselho Federal de Medicina. Em parceria com o Ministério da Saúde, participou do Programa de Valorização do Profissional da Atenção Básica do Ministério da Saúde do Brasil que procura criar soluções para fixar profissionais médicos em regiões remotas e periferias pobres de grandes cidades brasileiras. Em parceria com a Organização Pan Americana de Saúde, participou do programa Pró-residência, com o objetivo do desenvolvimento de programas de residência em áreas remotas e carentes no Brasil. Esta paixão pela aplicação de evidências científicas em educação e pela inovação das metodologias de ensino, fizeram com que Marco liderasse diversos processos de renovação e implementação de disciplinas e currículos e, também, participasse de diferentes estratégias de capacitação docente. Inicialmente investigador da área básica, no campo da resistência à insulina, nos últimos anos, tem se dedicado a investigação na área de educação médica, consolidando três linhas principais de investigação: (1) desafios na formação da identidade profissional, (2) optimização do ensino de raciocínio clínico e prevenção de erros diagnósticos, e, finalmente, (3) Comunidades de Prática como estratégia para capacitação docente. A transição para a investigação na área em educação médica consolidou-se nos últimos três anos em que Marco atuou como pesquisador sênior no grupo de investigação LEARN (“Lifelong Learning, Education & Assessment Research Network”) do University Medical Center Groningen, na Holanda, sob a liderança da professora titular Debbie Jaarsma. Neste período, Marco capacitou-se em métodos de pesquisa qualitativa e estabeleceu uma parceria com a professora Sílvia Mamede da Erasumus University em Rotterdam, Holanda, liderança na área de investigação em raciocínio clínico. Em julho de 2020, Marco tornou-se professor associado de medicina interna na Escola de Medicina da Universidade do MInho em Portugal com a missão de colaborar na criação de um grupo de pesquisa em educação médica, e no desenvolvimento de programas de mestrado e doutorado nesta mesma área.
