Andreia de Freitas Silva (AFS) was honoured as the top freshman student in the Chemical Engineering course at the University of Aveiro in 2009. She graduated with distinction in November 2014, achieving a final grade of 17. During her Master¿ studies, she conducted her thesis research at Novozymes A/S in Denmark, focusing on the enzymatic bleaching of kraft pulp. Under the joint supervision of Dr. Pedro Loureiro (Novozymes A/S) and Dr. Dmitry Evtyugin (University of Aveiro), her work contributed to the optimization of the bleaching process for novel enzymes. In February 2015, AFS started a doctoral (PhD) program at the University of Aveiro with a PhD grant sponsored by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. Under the guidance of Dr. Anabela Valente and Dr. Carlos Silva, her PhD research focused on the ¿Oligomerization of light olefins in the presence of porous inorganic acid catalyst". Throughout her PhD studies, AFS developed skills in designing and assembling a laboratory workstation for heterogeneous catalysis, along with the preparation and characterization of catalytic materials. She acquired proficiency in analytical tools such as gas chromatography, and employed statistical tools to optimize reaction conditions, leading to the production of diesel-range-type products. AFS successfully defended her PhD in Chemical Engineering in March 2019. Post-PhD, AFS conducted research at CICECO ¿ Aveiro Institute of Materials, University of Aveiro, for the project "Bio-derived olefins conversion using reaction-induced self-separating catalysts" (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030075), from June 2019 to December 2021. Her work included the preparation and characterization of Zr- and Hf-based hybrid materials to serve as catalytic systems for the conversion of bio-based chemicals into added-value products and as carbon monoxide releasing materials for therapeutic applications. Her contributions extended to mechanistic and kinetic modelling studies using Matlab. AFS also assisted a Chemical Engineering MSc student in catalyst preparation and characterization and kinetic modelling. Her research journey continued at CICECO within the project ¿GCORK ¿ 'Desenvolvimento de rolhas de cortiça aglomerada com colas e tratamentos de superfície Bio, produzidas por processos mais verdes e sustentáveis¿ (POCI-01-0247- FEDER-070302), from February to June 2024. She renovated a laboratory setup for gas adsorption experiments, focusing on removing volatile organic compounds from cork using porous adsorbents. AFS conducted breakthrough curves measurement of diverse materials (activated carbon, clays, zeolites) and studied the regeneration at high temperature. Furthermore, she created novel adsorbents through post-synthesis modifications of commercial zeolites. Concurrently, she supervised an Chemical Engineering Erasmus Student during their final project, offering guidance and expertise in the laboratory work. Currently, since November 2023, AFS has been contributing as a researcher within the project ¿H2Driven Green Agenda¿ at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto. She leads a subproject focused on the production and purification of dimethyl ether, jet- and maritime-fuel. Additionally, she is actively involved in two other subprojects related to the production and valorisation of methanol. Her research pursuits underscore her commitment to advancing sustainable and innovative solutions within the realm of chemical engineering and materials science. AFS has co-authored 16 articles published in international journals, with an h-index of 9 and 240 citations (Scopus). She has also presented 35 communications at national and international scientific meetings.
