Alcinda Pinheiro de Sousa was an Associate Professor of English Literature at the Lisbon University School of Arts and Humanities, where she taught since 1972. The bulk of her teaching was English literature, literary criticism and theory, and visual culture. She retired from teaching in 2019. Pinheiro de Sousa continues her research at the University of Lisbon Centre for English Studies (ULICES) where she served on its executive board since 1990. She is now co-coordinating a ULICES project on cultural and literary forms of reception and memory (Research Groups 1 and 2). Her research places special emphasis in the area of Romantic studies, with a focus on William Blake. Over the past five years, together with research colleagues, she has co-authored: “‘Enough! Or Too much’: The Reception of Blake in Portugal”, in The Reception of William Blake in Europe (Bloomsbury, 2019); ‘Reception: “Jane Austen 2.00”’, in English Literature in the World: From Manuscript to Digital, also co-edited by her (Húmus, 2020); “Portuguese Readings of William Blake: Fernando Pessoa, a National Poet, and Três Tristes Tigres, a Pop-Rock Band”, in Blake in Europe (Blake/An Illustrated Quarterly, winter 2021-22); ‘The “Matchmaker”: From Food & Literary Studies to Reception & Memory Studies’ (to be published by CRC Press in 2023); and “Urizen Now: Reading Anew William Blake’s Response to his Times”, in Weaving Tales: Anglo- Iberian Encounters on Literatures in English (Routledge, 2024).
