Makhabbat Ramazanova holds a PhD in Tourism from the University of the Balearic Islands (Spain), awarded with the distinction International Doctorate and Cum Laude in 2019. During her doctoral studies, she undertook international research stays in Spain, Romania and Portugal (2015–2019), funded through competitive scholarships including Erasmus Mundus CANEM, Coimbra Group Scholarship, Santander Bank and Erasmus+, which contributed to the consolidation of her international research profile. She holds a MSc in Sustainable Development from the Dublin Institute of Technology, Ireland (2013), MSc in Tourism and BSc in Finance from Ualikhanov University, Kazakhstan (2011). She is currently Assistant Professor at the Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture at Universidade Portucalense (UPT), Portugal, and an integrated researcher at REMIT – Research on Economics, Management and Information Technologies. Since January 2024, she has served as Visiting Professor in Tourism at Ualikhanov University (Kazakhstan), contributing to the strengthening of institutional cooperation, academic mobility and joint research initiatives. During last 10 years, she has developed a consolidated scientific profile with publications in international journals indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, conference proceedings indexed internationally, edited books with international academic publishers and book chapters. Her research focuses primarily on sustainable tourism, regional development, destination management and the relationship between tourism and natural resources, with particular emphasis on the tourism–water nexus (which was a central topic of her PhD thesis). A distinctive feature of her academic trajectory is her leadership and participation in internationally funded research and capacity-building projects, with activities developed across Europe, Central Asia, Southeast Asia and Latin America. She has served as Principal Investigator and researcher in 15 international projects aimed at promoting sustainable tourism development, innovation and entrepreneurship in ecotourism, preservation cultural heritage, and sustainable management of natural resources. Her work also contributes to strengthening research management and institutional capacity in higher education institutions, especially in developing regions. Through these initiatives, she has supported curriculum modernization, interdisciplinary training, and stronger collaboration between universities, industry, and public institutions, contributing to knowledge transfer and sustainable regional development. She also plays an active role in the international scientific community as Executive Director of the Central Asian Regional Science Association (CARSA), affiliated with the Regional Science Association International (RSAI), contributing to the development of regional science networks and research collaboration in Central Asia. Since 2021, she has served as Coordinator of the Master’s Programme in Tourism and Hospitality at UPT. She has continuously strengthened her pedagogical competencies through training in innovative teaching methodologies and digital learning environments. Her academic activity also includes knowledge transfer and outreach, through international training initiatives, masterclasses, invited lectures, and scientific consultancy related to sustainable tourism and regional development.
