Carla Ferreira da Silva Pais Vieira

Carla Pais-Vieira, an honorary graduate in Psychology in 2007, completed her MSc in Clinical and Health Psychology in 2010. Her expertise in psychology, enriched by neuroscience, has driven her contributions to healthcare innovation by integrating mental and cognitive health into broader medical advancements. From 2011 to 2016, she pursued her PhD at the Cabeza Laboratory, Center for Cognitive Neuroscience, Duke University (USA). There, she investigated the neural mechanisms of memory and their interplay with perception, attention, and emotions, gaining expertise in experimental task design for fMRI, and behavioral and neuroimaging data analysis. Returning to Portugal, she served as a clinical neuropsychologist for the Ministry of Defense (2016–2019), focusing on war veterans' psychological and neurocognitive needs. Since 2016, she has also been an Invited Assistant Professor at the Nursing School of the Catholic University of Portugal (UCP), teaching and supervising MSc and PhD students. Her contributions have enhanced the integration of psychology into nursing education, emphasizing the neuroscientific dimensions of conditions such as gastrointestinal diseases and the impact of ostomies on patients’ well-being. From 2017 to 2019, she collaborated with the Brain-Machine Interface Research Lab (BMIsLab) at UCP’s CIIS. Her work included research on somatosensory perception, securing funding proposals, and addressing the ethical implications of BMI technologies. She received the Corruption Prevention Prize from the Portuguese Court of Auditors for her contributions to legislation on BMI usage. Between 2019 and 2022, during a post-doctoral position at BMIsLab, she developed a patented thermotactile stimulation device and a robotic neurorehabilitation protocol for spinal cord injury patients. Her projects, integrating exoskeletons, virtual reality, and neuroimaging, demonstrated the practical applications of neuropsychology in creating innovative therapeutic devices aligned with regulatory standards. Since 2022, she has served as the Coordinator Researcher of BMIsLab, leading groundbreaking research on BMIs applied to health and securing over €300,000 in competitive funding. She also won the 2022 European Institute of Innovation & Technology (EIT) Health Jumpstarter Grand Final with a home-based neurorehabilitation system for locomotor disorders. Concurrently, from 2022 to 2024, she managed the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) of €1.24 billion in European-funded investments at the Central Administration of the Health System (ACSS) within Portugal’s National Health Service (SNS). This dual role highlighted her ability to balance research leadership with the strategic implementation of large-scale healthcare initiatives. In April 2024, she joined CIIS-UCP as a researcher for the Health From Portugal (HfPT) project, developing a mobile solution for diagnosing and treating chronic wounds. Her expertise in psychology, grounded in neuroscience, bridges the brain-behavior relationship to inform innovative healthcare solutions. Her contributions to the HfPT project focus on integrating advanced technology, including AI and risk management systems, to enhance medical device safety and effectiveness. Since September 2024, she has also been an Invited Assistant Professor in the Master's program in Clinical Psychology and Neuropsychology at the University of Aveiro. Her scientific pursuits combine her training in clinical psychology and neuroscience to advance basic and translational research. She focuses on detection, prevention, rehabilitation, and disease management, aiming to develop innovative, practical solutions for complex healthcare challenges. By uniting psychological principles with cutting-edge technology, she contributes to impactful advancements in public health and patient care.
