Andre Novoa has a degree in History from the New University of Lisbon, a master's in Anthropology from the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon (where he was the recipient of two awards for 'best student' of the department and of the institute itself), and a PhD in Geography from Royal Holloway, University of London, where he worked under the supervision of Tim Cresswell, producing a thesis on the mobilities and identities of professional groups travelling across the European Union. This work was published in 2019 by Routledge in a revised and expanded monograph , for which Andre received another award as "best young anthropologist" from the Portuguese Anthropological Association (APA). Between 2014 and 2016, Andre worked at Northeastern University, Boston, as a researcher of "Decarbonized mobilities", funded with over 1 million dollars by the Mobile Lives Forum (Paris). The project was a study of how 14 countries worldwide, plus two international bodies, were responding to the current climate crisis by making their mobility regimes greener and more sustainable. The team participated in conferences in Naples, San Francisco, Chicago, Exeter, London, Paris and Mexico City. Also, the team published a paper for Transactions of the British Institute of Geographers (impact factor 4.320), which was ranked top 1% for most downloads in 2019, and a book in 2021 for ZED books, which is expected to become a best seller in the field of mobility studies and sustainability. Between 2016 and 2020, Andre Novoa was a ERC researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon, as part of the "Colour of Labour: the Racialized Lives of Migrants" (Advanced Grant nº 695573) team, focusing his attention on the entanglements of labour, mobility and race. Andre participated in conferences in Ottawa, New Bedford, Lisbon and others, and organized an international symposium on Mobile Labour, from which resulted a special issue for Mobilities journal with him as editor alongside Cristiana Bastos and Noel Salazar. Andre was also an editor of a special volume on Ocean Crossings for Portuguese Literary & Cultural Studies, based at the University of Massachussetts. Andre was an assistant editor of HAU: Journal of Ethnographic Theory (SOAS, London) and a referee for multiple academic journals, including Mobilities, the Canadian Journal of Sociology, Area, The Geographical Journal, International Journal of Tourism Anthropology, Etnográfica and Anatolia. Since 2016, Andre teaches "Ethnography" to PhD students in the Migrations Studies program, based at the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning, University of Lisbon. His work is published in important journals like Mobilities, Environment and Planning A, and Transactions of the British Institute of Geographers. In addition to his academic career, Andre has created an indie RPG (roleplaying games) label, Games Omnivorous, which led him to collaborate with game designers, writers, story-boarders, illustrators and graphic artists from all over the world. He has authored and edited more than fifteen games, some of which have received international accolades, including three nominations and one gold medal in the 2021 ENNIES (the ‘Oscars’ of roleplaying games, the most prestigious awards in the industry worldwide). These include 17th century Minimalist (‘Most Original Game’ in No Dice Unrolled awards 2020), Mausritter (‘Best 2020 Games’ for Tabletop Gaming Magazine 2020, ENNIE Gold Winner for ‘Best Family Game’ 2021) and Undying Sands (ENNIE-nominee for ‘Best Setting’ and ‘Best Cartography’ 2021). Andre is the recipient of the Hartvig Award 2021 for ‘Excellency in Gaming’ by Rolisboa, the most important Portuguese roleplaying convention. He has worked in the field of sound-design, creating soundtracks for games, such as “Death Robot Jungle” and “Putrescence Regnant”, which was one of the most funded musical projects ever at Kickstarter.
