David Maria Aguiar Abecasis

David Abecasis (DA) obtained his PhD in Marine Ecology in 2013 from the University of the Algarve. DA is currently an Assistant Professor at Universidade do Algarve. His main research interests include the spatial ecology of marine species, and the monitoring, design and evaluation of marine protected areas at different levels (local, national, and continental). This research has led to 56 publications, 30 of which in the last 4 years, with some in high impact field specific journals such as Molecular Biology and Evolution or Global Ecology and Biogeography but also in multidisciplinary journals such as Nature Communications or Scientific Data. Of these, DA is the first and/or corresponding author of 23 (49%) and senior author of 17 (22%). He taught the Marine Protected Areas, Marine Conservation, and Management and Conservation courses to MSc students at Universidade do Algarve since 2019. He supervised/co-supervised 21 MSc thesis (18 finished) and 4 PhD thesis (1 finished). DA has attracted one fully funded PhD student from the highly competitive La Caixa INPhiNIT PhD programme. He participates or participated as Principal Investigator in 4 projects and as a team member in 16 projects. DA has attracted over 600k euros in funding through projects and scientific consultation, most of it in the last 5 years. He has been involved in several working groups on the implementation of MPA networks at a national and regional (Azores) level. He is member of the core group of the European Tracking Network (ETN) and leader of the Working Group on "ETN infrastructure and research on key species" of the COST Action "The European Aquatic Animal Tracking Network". DA is also member of the International Scientific Advisory Committee of the Ocean Tracking Network. He has contributed to the dissemination of CCMAR's scientific research through school presentations, radio and TV interviews, articles in newspapers and on several internet forums.
