Maria Lurdes Lopes is full Professor of the University of Porto, Faculty of Engineering. The main area of scientific activity is circular economy in construction environment, including recovery of residues as construction materials, namely, construction and demolition waste and bottom ashes from municipal wastes incineration. Other main research area is geosynthetics, namely the durability and endurance of geosynthetics, the development of proper design methods for structures with these materials, static and cyclic behaviour of geosynthetics reinforced structures, soil-geosynthetic interaction with granular and cohesive soils, geosynthetics in railways and the geosynthetics in coastal protection. Development of new geosynthetics materials. Environmental geotechnics, particurlaly the mechanical, physical, biochemical and mechanical characterization of the behaviour of municipal waste and the development of proper stability design methods for landfills is also other interest of research. She is effective member of the administration board of the Collaborative Laboratory Laboratory Towards Circular Economy - CECOLAB. She is/was Council member of the Int Geosynthetics Society (IGS), 2000/04. President of the IGS PT Chapter, 2008/12; Vice-President, 2002/08. Vice-President of the PT committee on Environmental Geotechnics, since 2012. Expert of EU, since 2006. Evaluator of FP7 and H 2020 research projects. FCT evaluator since 2012. Member of the board of the Association Smart Waste Portugal, since 2015. Expert for the R & I Agenda for the Circular Economy of FCT (2017) and co-coordinator of this Research Agenda. Editorial board member of: environmental geotechnical (ICE), 2013-2016; Int. Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering (Springer), since 2014; GEOTECNIA, Luso-Brazilian journal on geotechnics, since 2004; Soils and Rocks, since 2020. PT delegate to TC215 (Environmental Geotechnics) of the ISSMGE. Co-Chair of the 4th Int Conf on WASTES: Solutions; Treatments; Opportunities. Member of the Scientific Committee of the 5th, 3th and 2th Int Conf on WASTES: Solutions; Treatments; Opportunities.
