Gonçalo Nogueira graduated in Biochemistry at the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) in 2018. His first steps as a researcher were done during his BSc. in a volunteer internship at the Laboratory of Metabolism and Bioactivity at the FCUL. In 2018, he pursued a MSc. program in Molecular Biology and Genetics at the FCUL, which further strengthened his knowledge in several science fields such as Cellular and Molecular Biology, Genetics, Immunology and Bioinformatics. In the first year of his MSc. he attended a curricular internship at the Research Institute for Medicines, where he participated in a project aimed at characterizing the complete genome sequence and structure of highly prevalent Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains in Portugal using cutting-edge data from 3rd generation sequencing platforms. In 2021, he completed his MSc. with a thesis that earned the 2nd prize of the 2020 Best Master Thesis Awards at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes (iMM), Lisbon, and an 20 out of 20 score in his class. In his thesis, developed in Miguel Prudêncio's Lab, at iMM, he showed that several antiretroviral therapies, administered to control the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) replication, not only negatively impact the liver stage development of the Plasmodium parasite, the causative agent of malaria, but also whole-organism vaccination against this disease. He was also highly involved in a project aimed at exploiting the mechanisms of innate immunity in Plasmodium liver infection to identify pathways that may be targeted for the development of new vaccine candidates against malaria. Currently, Gonçalo is developing his PhD thesis at the Institut Pasteur, Paris, in the Lymphocytes and Immunity Unit under Ana Cumano's supervision. In his project he is interested in identifying the specific molecular events occurring in time and space during embryogenesis that lead to the generation of the cells that shape the thymic architecture, ultimately allowing to understand normal thymic function and develop strategies to reverse thymic involution.
