Sérgio de Almeida is a Group Leader at the Institute of Molecular Medicine João Lobo Antunes (iMM-JLA) and an Associate Professor with Habilitation at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. His research focuses on the mechanisms that control chromatin dynamics during transcription and DNA damage repair and how they coordinate with the processes that safeguard genome integrity. To this end, the lab employs a multidisciplinary research strategy that combines experimental tools and approaches from areas such as cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, live-cell microscopy, next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics. He has published several original research papers in journals such as Nature Structural and Molecular Biology, Science Advances, eLife, Nucleic Acids Research, Cell Reports, Molecular Cell, and Genome Research. His work was cited over 2000 times (h index=21) and received several prestigious national and international awards including the Pfizer Award for basic research. Sérgio de Almeida is the inventor of two patents, supervised 8 PhD students (4 completed), and 5 post-doctoral fellows. His research was funded through competitive grants from different agencies totalling more than ¿1M euros.
