I start my research work in 1984 supervised by Prof. Joaquim S. Cabral. Since then my research interests are in Biochemical Engineering area, mainly in protein and plasmid DNA separation and purification, membrane processes and process integration and simulationI am a faculty member of the former Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering (IBB) and of the Centre for Biological and Chemical Engineering (CEBQ), at Instituto Superior Técnico. My current research is based on bioprocess design and economic assessment, focused on plasmid DNA (pDNA) manufacturing processes (production, separation, purification, quality control and monitoring) for application in gene therapy or DNA vaccination. The utilization of membrane processes (ultra and microfiltration) and the development of alternative methods for plasmid release are under research. The development of alternative microbial GRAS (generally recognized as safe) platforms for pDNA and lactic acid production and the production/purification of carotenoids/lipids using symbiotic microalgae/yeasts cultures are other goals of my research.
