José Marcelino holds a PhD in Biomedical Sciences from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Lisbon. He is currently a researcher at the Instituto de Investigação do Medicamento (iMed.ULisboa) in the HIV Evolution, Epidemiology and Prevention group. His research focuses on the humoral response to HIV-1 and HIV-2 infection. He has extensive experience in murine monoclonal antibody production, animal cell culture, isolation and characterization of HIV-1/HIV-2 isolates, expression, purification and characterization of HIV-1 and HIV-2 proteins, epitope mapping, characterization of anti-HIV binding and neutralizing antibody responses in mice, rabbits and humans, and animal immunization. He also has extensive experience in the BSL-3 laboratory. He has lectured at various courses and higher education institutions. He has authored and co-authored several scientific articles in various international journals in the field of HIV and is involved in national and international projects related to the evaluation of HIV vaccine. He was awarded the Pfizer Clinical Research Prize in 2012 for his discovery that HIV-2 resistance to neutralizing antibodies occurs at advanced stages of the disease and is associated with viral tropism for the CXCR4 coreceptor. He is actively involved in the training of PhD, master’s, and undergraduate students. He has shown that HIV-2 resistance to neutralizing antibodies occurs in advanced stages of the disease and is associated with viral tropism for the CXCR4 coreceptor. He has been actively involved in the training of PhD, MS, and undergraduate students. He is the Principal Investigator of a project funded by Gilead to develop and evaluate a vaccine against HIV-1 and HIV-2 using mRNA encoding chimeric envelope glycoproteins of HIV-1 and HIV-2.
