Aoife Hiney completed a PhD in Music at the Universidade de Aveiro (UA), Portugal in 2017, with the thesis entitled 'Pedagogy through Performance: a Kodály-based musical literacy programme for communitarian choirs'. She holds a Masters in Music Performance (Choral Conducting) from UA (2012) and an Honours Degree in Music Education from Trinity College, Dublin (2007). Aoife studied conducting with António Vassalo Lourenço (PT), Bernie Sherlock (IE), David Brophy (IE), Ite O'Donovan (IE), Lilla Gabor (HU), Marco António da Silva Ramos (BR), Neil Ferris (UK) and Vasco Negreiros (PT). In 2012, she founded the chamber choir Voz Nua in Aveiro. Voz Nua have participated in international competitions, released two albums and have performed over 20 world premieres. She founded the non-profit cultural association Voz Nua in 2015, and currently conducts two of the Association's three choirs of the Association - Voz Nua and Voz Pop. Aoife has worked with a range of non-professional choirs, including a choir specifically for retired people (2014 - 2019) and a musical ensemble with adults with special educational needs and acquired brain injuries (2013 - 2017). She was a committee member of the National Kodály Society of Ireland (2007 - 2010) and has participated in a number of Kodály courses. Her teaching experience ranges from primary school to post-graduate level. The artistic director of the Festival Internacional de Coros, Aveiro, and associate director of the ZêzereArts Choral Festival, she also jointly coordinates LABEAMUS, a laboratory for the teaching and learning of musics at UA. Her research interests intersect the fields of music education, music performance and ethnomusicology, with a particular interest in community music-making, the development of musical literacy for adult learners through the Kodály Concept and shared research practices. As a researcher, she is a member of the SOMA (Sounds and Memories of Aveiro) research team. She held the position of contracted researcher for the SOMA project and continues to collaborate with the team. Her most recent work includes articles focusing on shared research practices with adult learners, rock bands in Aveiro from the 1960s to 1990, and the artistic and learning processes involved in the construction of a collective musical interpretation. Aoife is currently an invited lecturer at the University of Aveiro and at the Escola Superior de Educação, Instituto Politécnico do Porto, teaching on the degree and masters programmes, an integrated researcher at INET-md/UA and a member of the professional vocal ensemble ZAVE, directed by Brian MacKay.
