The scientific research area of Raquel Garcia is Food Science focused on olive oil and wine matrices. The research thematics are mainly related with emerging topics - Traceability, authentication, Adulteration and food safety (in terms of chemical contaminants). One of the Raquel Garcia's main research activity is dedicated to the implementation of highly selective sample preparation methodologies for the isolation and detection of pesticide residues in olive oil based on molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs). Raquel Garcia is involved on the synthesis of these imprinting materials and their chemical caracterization and also on several studies that enable to assess the capacity of molecular recognition of these polymeric materials in order to evaluate their suitability as adsorbents for solid phase extraction (SPE). This work has been extended to the design and develop of a new class of functional materials for sample preparation applications based on molecularly imprinted polymers but that integrates in their structure, monomers that are able to respond to external stimulus, enabling an straightforward separation and controlable uptake/release of the target analytes. These "smart" sorbents prove to be promising on the enrichment/preconcentration of pesticides in olive oil samples. Actually, a new approach based on sensor technology using MIPs as molecular recognition material are being also explored to trace analysis of pesticide residues in olive oil, under the scope of an ongoing FCT funded project. Research activities of Raquel Garcia are also devoted to the chemical characterization of wine and olive oils using chromatographic (HPLC, GC, LC-MS and GC-MS) and spectroscopic (NIR, NMR) techniques in order to assess the volatile and phenolic composition of these matrices and correlated them with the technological processes involved in their production. Moreover, more recently, studies of profiling and fingerprinting in olive oils has been also performed involving chromatographic (HPLC, GC) and spectroscopic (NIR, NMR) techniques. Raquel Garcia has international collaborations with wine´s research groups from University of Castilla-La Mancha (Profª Rosário Salinas) and University of Rioja ICVV (Drª Teresa Gardén Cerdan), publishing several paper with those teams and working actively with them. Raquel Garcia is Ad Hoc Reviewer of: Journal of Chromatography A, Food Research International, African Journal of Food Science, Journal of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Analysis.
