Vera Homem graduated in Chemical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP, www.fe.up.pt) in 2007 (5 years) and obtained her PhD in Environmental Engineering from the same institution in 2011. She is currently a member of the Laboratory of Process, Environmental, Biotechnological and Energy Engineering (LEPABE, https://www.lepabe.fe.up.pt), in the Environmental Sciences and Technologies Research Group. As a result of LEPABE's participation in ALiCE - Associated Laboratory in Chemical Engineering (https://alice.fe.up.pt/), she is a member of ALiCE in the Environmental Thematic Line. Her research career started in 2007 with a research fellowship at LEPABE (3 months) in the field of analytical chemistry. In the same year, she received a PhD scholarship from the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in the field of Environmental Sciences until 2011, and between 2012 and 2018 she was a FCT Postdoctoral Fellow. Between 2018 and 2019, she was also a junior researcher (DL57) at LEPABE and she is currently an assistant researcher at the same research unit, after winning the 2017 Individual Scientific Employment Stimulus Competition (CEEC). Her research career has focused on analytical chemistry, in particular instrumental analytical methods applied to environmental matrices. She combines more than ten years of experience in the development, optimisation and validation of analytical methods, in particular high resolution chromatographic methods for the identification and quantification of emerging compounds in environmental matrices, with risk assessment methodologies (environmental and human health) using statistical tools with a focus on multivariate approaches. In fact, it is essential to combine environmental monitoring capacities with risk assessment tools in order to identify the target compounds to be studied in subsequent work on environmental treatments. In terms of instrumental analytical methods, V. Homem has been particularly involved in the study of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and "greener" extraction methods and their miniaturisation - for example, QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged and Safe) extraction, dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME), solid-phase microextraction (SPME). V. Homem has also contributed to the study of remediation technologies, exploring advanced oxidation processes and sorption. Currently, the research strategy also includes the creation of an integrated and multidisciplinary approach to the treatment and management of wastewater and sewage sludge through the detection and mitigation of emerging risks, development of environmental risk assessment studies, prioritization systems and plant uptake studies. From the point of view of the research activity, she has published 54 scientific papers in international journals and 3 book chapters indexed by Science Citation Index or Scopus, with 2670 citations (H-index of 20, excluding self-citations). About 71% of the scientific papers were published in journals of first quartile in their areas of specificity, about 49% as corresponding author, 29% as the first author. Her work has also been presented in several national and international conferences (51 oral and 72 poster presentations), including 9 invited talks. She was also Associate Editor of the international journal Frontiers in Analytical Science, in the field of environmental analysis, and has been editor of 3 books and a special (virtual) publication in the journal Science of the Total Environment. She was responsible for an R&D project funded in a competitive environment by FCT ("AGRONAUT"; 225 k€) and for the CEEC Individual 2017 project, which allowed her to be recruited as a research assistant ("WATERWHOLE") and participated in other 20 projects. She have been regularly invited to teach at the FEUP for the last 14 years, in curricular units under the responsibility of the Chemical Engineering Department
