Emanuel Ferreira Fernandes is a postdoc in the Neuronal Circuit and Behavior lab (NCBL) at CIBB (Centro de Inovação em Biomedicina e Biotecnologia), University of Coimbra (UC). He completed his PhD at the University of Lisbon in 2020 , where he joined the Remondes Lab in iMM - Instituto de Medicina Molecular, and built a strong background in Systems Neuroscience. As the first PhD student in the Remondes Lab, he contributed to set up the entire lab and focused on rodent foraging behaviors as a model for spatial working memory, studying the underlying cingulate-hippocampal interactions. His work provided the first integrated structural and functional characterization of the cingulate-hippocampal circuits in spatial working memory, uncovering a structural and functional gradient in cingulate-hippocampal circuits. In 2020, he moved to NCBL, where he is currently developing a project devoted to uncover the interaction between social memory and hierarchical behavior, implying the structural and functional characterization of prefrontal-hippocampal circuits engaged during the formation of social hierarchies in rodents. Present interests center on using advanced models to understand how neuronal ensembles give rise to adaptive social behavior, specifically hierarchical behavior, and maladaptive socal behavior, prominent in patients suffering from neuropsychiatric and developmental disorders. To achieve this, he uses a combination of anatomical tracing, optogenetics, electrophysiological approaches (in vitro and in vivo) and behavioral protocols in rodent models. As a young graduate, Emanuel Ferreira Fernandes is highly motivated to keep pursuing high risk/high challenge research activity in Systems Neuroscience, while addressing fundamental questions concerning brain function at the mesoscale level, studying neural ensemble activity during behavior in health and disease, at a leading institute for neuroscience research in Portugal, CIBB. In the future, he aims to work in a research-intensive tenure-track university position and lead high quality research, while contributing to the ultimate, global quest of understanding how the brain generates (social) behavior.
