In 2013, Tito Teles Jesus (TT Jesus) has completed his Master degree in Biomedical Sciences, at the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal, and was awarded with a Young Researcher Fellowship at the Health Sciences Research Center from the same University, with research interests in cell physiology, membrane transport and ionic modulation, particularly in Sertoli cells. In 2014, TT Jesus was accepted at the PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences at Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas Abel Salazar, University of Porto, where he became a member of the Biology and Genetics of Reproduction research group from the Unit for Multidisciplinary Research in Biomedicine and, in 2015, he was awarded with 4-year FCT PhD fellowship. His interests were to study the link between metabolic diseases, such as obesity and diabetes, and the male reproductive potential, specifically the mechanisms regulated by insulin and by the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway. During that period, he worked on the project funded by FCT, entitled "Is mTOR a novel regulator of Sertoli cell metabolism and a mediator of obesity-related male subfertility/infertility?" (SFRH/BD/103518/2014). He worked on male reproductive biology, metabolic modulation and main cell signaling pathways that can be related with subfertility or infertility. From June 2016 to July 2017, he had the opportunity to work in the lab of C. Yan Cheng, PhD, the Mary M. Wohlford Laboratory for Male Contraceptive Research, in the Center for Biomedical Research of Population Council, at the Rockefeller University Campus, New York, to evaluate the role mTOR signaling pathway in the regulation of the actin- and microtubules-based cytoskeleton and blood-testis barrier (BTB) dynamics, in vitro and in vivo. Finally, to assess the role of mTOR in a clinical relevant setting related with sperm physiology, and as mTOR acts as a metabolic modulator, it was hypothesized that the supplementation of a commercial sperm preservation medium with a mTOR enhancer could modulate sperm quality after short-term storage. This work was the ground for the patent WO/2019/025961: mTOR enhancers and uses thereof to improve sperm quality and function during storage. In 2019, he has completed his PhD at the University of Porto with the thesis entitled "mTOR pathway is a novel regulator of male fertility" collecting the results of mTORs role in modulating Sertoli Cells metabolism and oxidative profile and preserving sperm quality and function during short time storage. In the same year, TT Jesus was hired with a Junior Researcher contract under a project funded by FCT (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-030625), at i3S, in Cancer Metastasis group. Within this group, TT Jesus has applied his background on cellular and molecular biology to cancer research, namely in understanding the role of P-cadherin-mediated cell-cell adhesion in breast cancer cell metabolism, stemness and actin mechanotransduction, with focus on epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) related mechanisms. He is now a contrated Junior Researcher, under a FCT funded project (PTDC/MED-ONC/0531/2021), at i3S, in Cancer Signalling & Metabolism group. Since January 2024 he is PI of the project entitled "The metastatic code of thyroid cancer" funded by Ipatimup (50k €) awarded at the 4th Edition of Prémio Francisco Augusto da Fonseca Dias e Maria José Melenas da Fonseca for Young Researchers. Until now, he has 17 published articles, acting as first author in 6, he is author/co-author of 2 book chapters, author/co-author of 8 proceedings, and has 3 prizes Best Oral Communication, and 1 international patent (h-index 12).
