Marta Lopes is a Biologist (BSc) from the School of Life and Environmental Sciences, University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (2016), and has an MSc in Health Sciences from the School of Medicine, Univerity of Minho (2018). During her undergraduate training period, she grew an interest in the oncology field and was involved in a project to study the expression of cytokeratin 19 and neu/HER2 in K14-HPV16 mice. Her MSc work was conducted in the Life and Health Sciences Research Institute (ICVS) under the supervision of Dr. Ana João Rodrigues and Dr. Bruno Costa. For that, she joined a project in the neuro-oncology field where she studied the effects of stress and glucocorticoids in glioma aggressiveness. In 2019, she was awarded a research fellowship (FAM1901, Fundação Amélia de Mello) in the Basic & Clinical Research on Iron Biology group, under the supervision of Dr. Delfim Duarte in IBMC/I3S. Currently, she is conducting this project that aims to uncover the role of CD18 in the acute myeloid leukemia microenvironment. She has also been collaborating in other research projects within her research group, including "The role of iron in the remodeling of the vascular niche in acute myeloid leukemia" (4339, EHA). Recently, she was awarded a PhD Research studentship in the 2021 competitive call of FCT, and started her PhD in Biomedical Sciences from ICBAS with the research project "Cell Competition as a mechanism to eliminate MRD in AML". During her academic path, she had the opportunity to materialize her scientific activity by presenting seven 1st-authorship posters, and six 1st-authorship oral communications. She is the first author of two regular articles, with a total of five regular articles in peer-reviewed journals, such as Leukemia, Blood Advances, and Frontiers in Oncology. She has also been involved with the organization of three scientific national meetings and volunteered for the i3S Task-Force Covid-19. She tutored two MSc students and two medical students under laboratory rotations within her research groups and is currently co-supervising one master's student. She was part of the PhD Students Representatives of i3S in 2023, and she received two awards for her work and one conference travel grant. She is proficient in molecular biology techniques (immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, qPCR, ELISA), imaging (fluorescence and confocal microscopy), and flow cytometry. She has expertise in cell culture, animal experimentation (FELASA C accreditation), and international accreditation for proficiency in English (TOEFL iBT).
