Jorge Gomes

Jorge Gomes is PI of the LIP distributed computing and digital infrastructures group and is also the technical coordinator of the Portuguese National Distributed Computing Infrastructure (INCD). He is a scientific associate at CERN where he worked in the development of data acquisition systems for High Energy Physics experiments. He participated in pioneer projects in the domains of digital data communications and advanced videoconference over IP networks. Since 2006, he is coordinator of the Portuguese Tier-2 in the CERN Worldwide LHC Computing Grid supporting the data processing for the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. Between 2006 and 2015 he coordinated several activities in the context of the Portuguese National Grid initiative, among them the national grid infrastructure and the deployment of a national datacenter in partnership with FCCN. Since 2015 he has been coordinating the implementation, development and operations of the Portuguese National Distributed Computing Infrastructure (INCD). He was member of the INCD management board, and is currently technical coordinator of this infrastructure that provides HPC, HTC, cloud and data services to the Portuguese research community. He coordinates the Portuguese participation in the European Grid Infrastructure (EGI), the largest multidisciplinary research infrastructure for distributed computing worldwide, and IBERGRID the regional initiative that joins scientific datacenters in Spain and Portugal. He was member of the EGI Executive Board and is the Portuguese representative at the EGI council. Since 2001 he participated in several large international e-science and e-infrastructure projects on distributed computing such as CrossGrid, Enabling Grids for E-Science (EGEE) I, II and III, Interactive European Grid (int.eu.grid), e-Infrastructure Shared Between Europe and Latin America (EELA), and Integrated Sustainable Pan-European Infrastructure for Researchers in Europe (EGI-InSPIRE) and EGI-ENGAGE. In the context of these computing projects he participated in the setup and coordination of the EUgridPMA and IGTF trust fabrics for research e-Infrastructures in Europe, Americas, Middle-East, and Africa. More recently, has been participating as LIP researcher in European projects such as INDIGO-DataCloud, DEEP-hybrid-DataCloud, EuroCC, EuroCC-2, DT-Geo, interTwin and in several European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) projects such as EOSC-hub, EOSC-Synergy, EGI-ACE, EOSC-Future, EOSC-Beyond and ENVRI-Hub-NEXT. As technical coordinator of the INCD infrastructure he also coordinated the participation of INCD in the EOSC projects C-Scale, EGI-ACE, EOSC-Synergy and in the upcoming CLIMATE-ADAPT4EOSC.
