Fátima de Jesus Folgôa Baptista

Fátima Baptista is an Agricultural Engineer (1st Degree 1992) and her main research activities focus on environmental control in rural structures (such as greenhouses and livestock buildings), energy efficiency in agriculture and agro-industry, and circular economy. She holds a PhD in Agricultural Engineering from the University of Évora (2007) and the title of Aggregated in Agrarian Sciences from the same university in 2015. Since 2021, she is Associate Professor with the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the University of Évora. From May 2023 onward, Fátima has taken on the role of Director at MED - Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development, a highly multidisciplinary R&D unit dedicated to the sustainability of ecosystems and food systems in the Mediterranean context with more than 300 researchers and collaborators. Prior to this position, she was Vice-director of ICAAM, the R&D unit that preceded MED, from 2015 to 2019. Fátima's academic career has been characterised by considerable mobility and internationalisation, involving various research projects and teaching collaborations with national and international institutions. She has actively contributed to around 50 project applications to competitive programmes, of which 11 have been approved, and has led teams of the University of Évora. She has also supervised 7 post-doctoral projects. In terms of research, Fátima has an h-index of 13, with 20 articles published in indexed journals in the Q1/Q2 and 13 in Q3/Q4. She has also a co-authored 14 book chapters with ISBNs and has presented around 100 papers at national and international congresses. Fátima has had a dynamic and impactful career, actively participating in various organisational and scientific committees, both nationally and internationally. Her involvement extended to diverse outreach initiatives, knowledge transfer, and training programmes, collaborating with working groups, companies, and producer associations. Fátima assumed the presidency of EurAgEng from July 2021 to November 2022, having been a Council member from 2009 to 2022 and joining the Executive in 2018. From 2014 to 2018, Fátima held the position of Vice-Chair of the Commission of Horticulture Engineering at the International Society of Horticultural Science (ISHS), contributing to the advancement of horticultural engineering on a global scale. Additionally, Fátima was the Coordinator of the Specialised Section of Rural Engineering (SEER) from 2009 to 2016. Currently, she holds the role of Vice-President of the General Assembly of the Society of Agricultural Sciences of Portugal (SCAP). With her remarkable journey as an Agricultural Engineer, professor, and leader characterised by a tireless commitment to advancing agricultural sciences and addressing societal challenges, Fátima aims to continue contributing to finding the answers provided by the science and academia and putting them into practice. In a world of constant change, the agricultural, agri-food, and agro-forestry sectors are increasingly dependent on the success of research.

Utilização da equação de Hargreaves Samani para o cálculo da ETo em estufas. A equação de Hargreaves Samani, HS, tem sido utilizada com sucesso para o cálculo da Evapotranspiração, Eto, ao ar livre. Os resultados indicam uma boa correlação entre a Eto obtida por este método e a obtida pelo método de Penman-Monteith, PM, que exige um conjunto maior de parâmetros. Interacção entre salinidade e fertilização azotada em sorgo sacarino (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). Plantas de sorgo sacarino foram expostas a quatro níveis de condutividade eléctrica (0, 2, 4, 6 dS m-1) e três níveis de fertilização azotada (20%, 60% e 100%) na água de rega, num desenho experimental 4 × 3, com 6 repetições, num total de 78 vasos. Pretendeu-se, assim, avaliar o efeito da interacção entre os vários níveis de salinidade e de fertilização azotado na tolerância das plantas de sorgo. 2011. Efeitos da salinidade e fertilização azotada nos parâmetros hídricos e fotossintéticos na fase inicial de desenvolvimento de Sorgo sacarino (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench). Utilizando plantas de Sorgo Sacarino, investigou-se a possibilidade de atenuação do efeito inibitório da salinidade pela aplicação de fertilização azotada. Greenhouses climate modelling. Tests, adaptation and validation of a dynamic climate model. Most greenhouse climate models are specific for a particular combination of greenhouse type, crop, region and weather conditions. Utilização de sistemas de aquecimento por ar e por água quente em estufas localizadas em zonas Mediterrânicas. Um dos principais objectivos da produção em estufa é a obtenção de plantas, em quantidade e qualidade, que de outro modo não seria possível devido às condições adversas do meio exterior.
