Paula Sobral – Biologist, PhD in Environmental Sciences, Associate Professor w/ Habilitation of Environmental Sciences at NOVA School of Science and Technology, researcher at MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre working on marine litter and microplastics sources and sinks and the effects of microplastics contamination on marine organisms. She has coordinated and participated in various research projects on microplastics since 2008 and published several papers in international journals and collaborated with other universities about the issues of marine litter and microplastics Designated expert on microplastics for the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT), she has collaborated with the Portuguese Environmental Agency and other government bodies onto the implementation of the EU Marine Strategy Framework Directive (descriptor 10 – marine litter), worked as member of UN GESAMP– Group of Experts on the Scientific aspects of Marine Pollution and integrates the pool of experts of the United Nations 2nd World Ocean Assessment. Founder of the Portuguese Marine Litter Association – APLM, an engagement platform for awareness and co-responsibility, she develops science communication activities about marine litter and microplastics.
