I completed a PhD in Biological Sciences (2009) at the Centre for Environmental & Molecular Biology (UMinho), assessing the pharmacological targets of newly synthesized phenolic imidazole derivatives and their potential as antioxidants for oxidative stress-related disorders. As a Post-Doctoral fellow (2010-2016), I merged my Molecular Biology expertise with Biotechnology tools to explore the molecular properties of antimicrobial peptides as potential therapeutics for burn wound healing and tuberculosis, having worked at the Centre of Biological Engineering (UMinho, PT), UC Riverside (USA) and Univ Medical Centre of Groningen (NL). These original studies, published in 5% of top-ranked journals, led to the filing of a PCT patent (WO2017098474A1) and awarded an Honor Mention in the 2016 Bluepharma/UCoimbra Innovation Award. Driven by addressing prevailing medical and societal challenges, and progressing my career, I moved (2016) to UCIBIO-REQUIMTE (UPorto). Currently, I am an Assistant Researcher (contract under Scientific Employment Stimulus, CEEC), working on assessing the 1) Developmental neurotoxicity of New Psychoactive Substances, namely synthetic cannabinoids (SCs); 2) Epigenetic impact of Substances of Abuse on neurotoxicological mechanisms; 3) Role of Substances of Abuse on accelerated cell senescence and aging; 4) Molecular mechanisms underlying the onset of mood and cognitive adverse events induced by pharmaceuticals. The main findings supported a Critical Review Report on AB-FUBINACA by the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) and were awarded a EUROTOX Travel Grant (2017). My team has also made substantial advances in evidencing the molecular mechanisms underlying the action of SCs on neurogenesis, a work that made the news (e.g. LUSA News Agency). These findings were groundbreaking as previously SC-related toxicity was mainly assessed at non-biologically relevant concentrations (above SC affinity to cannabinoid receptors). 2) Develop improved in vitro models to predict mood/cognitive adverse events (MCAEs) at early stages of pharmaceuticals R&D, having led the development of a unique workflow based on pharmacovigilance data mining and signaling pathway analyses that identified candidate mediators of MCAEs. As a result of my high-end scientific outputs, I ranked among the world's top 2% of most cited researchers for the past four consecutive years (2019-2022). My contributions have been INTERNATIONALLY RENOWNED by 1) integrating the Extended Expert list of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA)'s Scientific Committee for NPS risk assessment, 2) supporting drug dependence liability evaluation for WHO's Expert Committee on Drug Dependence, 3) providing critical feedback on data for the Global Burden of Disease Studies, and 4) being Expert Reviewer in H2020/IMI- and other European agencies-funded Actions, Editorial Board Member in 5 international journals, and peer-reviewer for 34 journals. I have secured funds at national/European competitive Calls (Unit: 620k¿, Total: 5.3M¿) and integrated other funded grants' teams (total: 4M¿+). I integrate the Faculty of Pharmacy's teaching staff (adding to previous teaching experience) and have vast experience in mentoring Post-doc, PhD, MSc, and BSc students (including ERASMUS+), evidencing SCIENTIFIC LEADERSHIP.
