Since 2010, Dr. Barroso has been working as a research fellow and has acquired experience in data analysis, image processing, Raman spectroscopy, optics, head and neck oncology, product development, equipment verification, and supervising master-students and PhD-students. From 2010 to 2013, she has worked in Portugal as a research fellow at two different universities (University of Porto and University of Beira Interior) and three different research centers (Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (INEGI), Institute of Telecommunications (IT), in Covilhã, and Institute of Molecular Pathology and Immunology (IPATIMUP) of the University of Porto. In 2013, she started to work on her PhD-thesis at the department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery of the Erasmus University Medical Center Rotterdam (Molecular Medicine Research School) in The Netherlands. She defended her PhD-degree in 2018. Over the last 6 years, she has been working in the field of Raman spectroscopy, head and neck oncology, head and neck pathology and head and neck surgery and has ample experience in working with industry. Her work has focused on developing methodology and instrumentation that can be used intra-operatively to guide oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma surgeries. Her research aims to increase the success rate of the surgical treatment, providing a better treatment for patients with head and neck cancer. She is committed to bring the results of her research from the laboratory bench to the patient. Since 2018 she holds a position at the department of Pathology of Erasmus Medical Center Rotterdam. Here she coordinates the following projects: - ''Optimizing surgical results for oral squamous cell carcinoma by intra-operative assessment of resection margins using Raman spectroscopy'', the Dutch Cancer Society-funded project (8027) aimed at intraoperative assessment of soft tissue resection margins, which started in 2016 and which will be concluded in 2020. - ''Ra-sure; Raman spectroscopy guided tumour surgery'', the EU-funded H2020-Eurostars-2 project, together with industry partners RiverD International B.V. (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) and art photonics GmbH (Berlin, Germany) which has started in 2018 and which aims to bridge the gap between the research results obtained in the KWF-project mentioned above and full industrial product development. - She is also a principal investigator project: ''Fluorescence-Raman head and neck cancer guided surgery - test of feasibility of combining fluorescence guided surgery with intra-operative margin assessment by Raman spectroscopy'' (funded by the Maurits & Anna de Kock Stichting). Dr. Barroso is the (co-author) of 9 peer-reviewed publications and of 1 patent application related to Raman-guided tumor surgery, with currently 3 further patent applications in preparation. Dr Barroso, has the skill and experience to perform and coordinate research in a multidisciplinary environment (surgery, pathology, engineering, industry).
