Lino Ferreira did his graduate work in Jonathan Dordick´s lab at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI, Albany, NY) and Helena Gil (University of Coimbra) in the development of carbohydrate-based hydrogels using nonaqueous enzyme technology. He did a first postdoc at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (Porto, Portugal) for 1 year, specifically at the laboratory of Mário Barbosa (2001 George Winter Award from the European Society of Biomaterials), and a second posdoc at MIT in the laboratory of Robert Langer (2002 Charles Stark Draper Prize) for 3 years. Lino Ferreira launched the group Biomaterials and Stem Cell Based Therapies in January 2008 at one of the poles of the Center of Neurosciences and Cell Biology located in Cantanhede (25 km away from Coimbra). After successful applications to national grants (regional and national grants from 2009 to 2012), the group attracted two large European projects (a Marie Curie ITN project entitled "Nanodrug" and an ERC starting grant entitled "Nanotrigger") which transformed the initial medium size group (10-15 members) in a large size group (25-30 members). In 2014, the group had acess to a laboratory with the capacity to host the team, fully equipped with state of the art equipment in imaging (confocal, high-content and laser dissection microscopes), cell sorting and gene analyses (high-throughput gene analyses). In 2013, the group was funded by a regional project (see below) with the objective to attract junior researchers at the new pole of CNC in Cantanhede. In the same year, Lino Ferreira participated actively in a proposal to fund a research center having CNC and IBILI as promoters. The project was funded by FCT in 2.5 million euros per year (between 2015 and 2018). The project was divided in 3 thematic strands. Lino Ferreira was the vice-coordinator of the thematic strand ¿Stem cell and molecular therapies¿. He was also the leader of one of the groups of the thematic strand called ¿Stem Cell Biotechnology¿. In 2016, Lino Ferreira attracted a prestigious European project (ERA Chair project) and become the ERA Chair holder in ageing (a strategic regional research line) at the University of Coimbra. Presently, he is actively involved, with other members of the University of Coimbra, to attract new research teams in the area of ageing, as well as resources to support those teams. In 2018, Lino Ferreira participated in the writing of a proposal to fund a research center having CNC and ICBR as promoters. He is the director of one of the three thematic strands and the leader of one of the research groups. Lino Ferreira future reseach plan will focus in two major goals: (1) the development of aged tissue models from human (stem) cells to get fundamental information about the human ageing process and to identify drugs that may interfere with that process, (2) the development of sophisticated delivery systems to deliver biomolecules for regeneration and/or anti-ageing properties. Regarding the first objective, in the last 10 years my research group has designed several tissue models from human stem cells including a blood vessel on a chip, a blood brain barrier, a cardiac tissue, among others. In the next 5 years, my research group will use the previous principles for the design of aged cardiovascular tissues. Regarding the second objective, my research group is interested in testing 2 hypotheses: (a) whether the modulation of endogenous stem cells may be a platform for more effective tissue regeneration and (b) whether the controlled release of drugs may increase tissue/organ performance.
