Carolina Barroso obtained a Bachelor's degree in Aquatic Sciences (ICBAS-UP, 2012), a Master's degree in Biological Aquatic Resources (FCUP-UP, 2014), and a Ph.D. in Molecular and Cell Biology (ICBAS/FCUP-UP, 2022). Her scientific career began at the Fish Nutrition and Immunobiology Group (CIIMAR) as an undergraduate student (2011-2012), where she conducted research on the effects of a multispecies probiotic on Senegalese sole growth and immune responses. For her Master's thesis (2013-2014), she investigated the partial replacement of fish meal with carob seed germ meal in diets for meagre, analyzing growth, hematological, and immune parameters (PP-IJUP2012-SOJA DE PORTUGAL-20). In 2016, she joined the Iron and Innate Immunity Group (i3S/IBMC) as a research fellow, to study antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) in European sea bass (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000012). In 2017, she was awarded a Ph.D. scholarship through a competitive call from FCT (SFRH/BD/114899/2016), to further pursue her studies focused on the roles and applications of sea bass-derived AMPs in models of infection and iron modulation. Her doctoral research culminated in five publications, including three as first and corresponding author (Int. J. Mol. Sci. 2020; Pharmaceuticals 2021; Front. Immunol. 2021). From September to December 2022, she worked as a research intern at REQUIMTE LAQV, ICBAS, on the project Bugs@Pets (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-047042). In January 2023, she became a junior researcher under the NovInDog project (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-047003) and contributed to HealthyPetFood (POCI-01-0247-FEDER-047073), resulting in a co-authored publication (Front. Vet. Sci. 2024). During this period, she also authored a literature review on the benefits of dietary vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients on canine immune responses (Vet. Sci. 2024). Currently, she holds a postdoctoral fellowship at the same institute (REQUIMTE 2024-03; UIDB/50006/2020), advancing her expertise in the development of functional and sustainable formulations for pet food. Throughout her career, Carolina Barroso has published 11 articles and participated in several national and international conferences. She also co-supervised two undergraduate students (Aquatic Sciences, ICBAS) and has been invited to review for Fish & Shellfish Immunology and Veterinary Medicine and Science. She has acquired expertise in various animal models (fish, mice and dogs) and techniques, including nucleic acid extraction, cloning, bioinformatics, real-time PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry, and ELISA.
