Lídia M.D. Gonçalves graduated in Applied Chemistry/Biotechnology and completed her PhD on Biological Engineering (Microbiological Technology) at the New University of Lisbon in 1993. She gets 4 years post-doc fellowship (1994-96) at ITQB/IBET, working on in vitro animal cell cultures for toxicology. She worked in a pharmaceutical company to coordinate the startup and GMP validation a new immunological veterinary production industrial unit and coordinated a multidisciplinary R&D project involving different leading research institutions. She has worked at the Pilot Plant Unit (IBET, Oeiras, Portugal) involving of translating research to the clinic. She is a member of the Advanced Technologies for Drug Delivery Research Group of the Research Institute for Medicines and Pharmaceutical Sciences (iMed.ULisboa). Currently, she is Principal Investigator at Faculty of Pharmacy of University of Lisbon (FFUL). Her major research interests involve the development and in vitro/ in vivo evaluation of new biocompatible 3D systems (micro/nano structures) for drug delivery including drug stabilization, co-delivery and targeting. In particular: the modulation of vaccines formulations to enhanced mucoadhesive properties aiming the intranasal delivery; the mucoadhesion nanoparticulate for ocular drug delivery with enhanced of bioavailability; novel systems for effective DNA delivery based on biocompatible and mucoadhesive polymers; and the protective effect of complex antigen mixtures by new polymeric particulate formulations. Her scientific activity has a major leading and networking role within different research groups, where she participates in several funded research projects. Specifically, as task leader of the in vitro assays on the area of discover of new compounds namely those as p53 modulators for cancer treatment. She has supervised several Pos-Doc, PhD, master, and graduation students (>50), published 149 scientific manuscripts in scientific peer-reviewed journals (h Index (Scopus) - 33) and filled 6 patents.
