Dr. Hélène Léger is a molecular biologist specializing in neuroinflammation and retinal degeneration. She has been a researcher at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, since 2020. Dr. Léger earned her Ph.D. in Biology and Health Sciences (Molecular and Cell Biology) from the University of Lille 1, France (2012), following a Master’s and Bachelor’s in Cellular Biology and Development from Université Paris-Sud (2006, 2008). During her undergraduate studies, she completed an exchange year at the University of Montréal, Canada, through the CREPUQ program, graduating with an overall grade of A. She also completed the prestigious international course Molecular Biology of the Cell, jointly organized by the Pasteur and Curie Institutes (2008). Dr. Léger began her research career as a postdoctoral fellow at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia (2012–2014), studying the interplay between epigenomic and transcriptional regulation in cancer. She then joined the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine (2014–2019), where she explored retinal cell proliferation and differentiation mechanisms using CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing in mouse models. Her current research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying neuroinflammatory responses in retinal degenerative diseases. She leads a collaborative project with the Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) on OpticCanvas: Painting the Visual Landscape of Degenerative Vision—an interdisciplinary software tool that models how patients with retinal degeneration perceive their surroundings. An accomplished mentor, Dr. Léger has co-supervised 11 bachelor’s and 5 master’s students, including 3 Erasmus exchange students. She has published 15 peer-reviewed articles (3 as first author, 3 as corresponding author) with an H-index of 9 and 375 citations (Scopus). Dr. Léger is also an active reviewer and guest editor for a special issue on Molecular Mechanisms of Retinal Development and Degeneration in the journal Biology (Q1, open access). Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. Léger has held leadership and community engagement roles. She chaired the Foreign National Committee for the Biomedical Postdoc Council at the University of Pennsylvania (2016–2019) and co-founded the Women Love Science Club at Fox Chase Cancer Center (2012). She has organized scientific meetings, served as Principal Investigator on multiple research projects, and received four research awards. Committed to science outreach, she regularly participates in initiatives such as the European Researchers’ Night and Low Vision Awareness Month.
