Lauren Ila Misiaszek, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Institute of International and Comparative Education at Beijing Normal University (since Fall 2013). She is the immediate Past Secretary General of the World Council of Comparative Education Societies (2016-2019). Before this, her two most recent full-time positions were as a United Kingdom Fulbright Scholar at Roehampton University in London and immediately before that for three years as a national program manager for the US Veterans Administration in Los Angeles. She has served as an Adjunct Lecturer at UCLA annually since 2008. Since 2007, Lauren has been involved with the leadership of the Paulo Freire Institute (PFI), a research institute in the Graduate School of Education & Information Studies (GSE&IS), UCLA (California, USA), situated within a broader network of 11 PFIs worldwide, where she currently serves as Associate Director and was named Honorary Co-Founder. She is a Fellow and Founding Member of the International Doctoral and Post-Doctoral Network on Gender, Social Justice, and Praxis hosted by the University of Newcastle (Australia). Lauren has a long history of work in Nicaragua that began in 2004 when she was a fellow for a sustainable development foundation there. She grew up in Virginia (USA) and worked in numerous community organizations there for ten years. Her research and publications (in English, Spanish, and Portuguese) have focused on critical pedagogies, comparative education, globalization and education, the sociology of higher education, gender studies, international service learning, and the intersections of humanities and the social sciences. Her edited book, Exploring the Complexities in Global Citizenship Education: Hard Spaces, Methodologies, and Ethics was recently published, and the companion, sole-authored book, Transforming Aesthetics in Global Citizenship Education: Experimental Essays (Routledge), is expected later this year. Lauren is the co-editor with Robert Arnove and Carlos Alberto Torres of the forthcoming (2021) two-volume 5th edition of Comparative Education: The Dialectic of the Global and the Local. Lauren is also a Member of the International Advisory Committee of the United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair in Global Learning and Global Citizenship Education (held by Professor Carlos Alberto Torres (UCLA)). She is a member of the Teaching in Higher Education Editorial Board and, with Executive Editor Peter Kahn, was recently guest co-editor of the journal’s special issue, “Educational mobilities and internationalised higher education: critical perspectives.” Lauren teaches Master’s and PhD courses in Comparative Education Research Methodologies, Policy Analysis in International Perspective, and Sociology of Education. Lauren holds BAs in Hispanic Studies and Sociology from William & Mary (Virginia), and an MA and PhD in Social Science and Comparative Education (with a specialization in Comparative and International Education) from UCLA, which she completed under the supervision of Professor Torres.
