Susana Solá graduated in Genetics and Biology, Faculty of Sciences, ULisboa, and received her PhD in Pharmacy, after PhD training at the University of Minnesota, MN, USA. Currently, Solá is Associate Professor with Habilitation in Faculty of Pharmacy, ULisboa (FFUL) and Leader of the Stem Cell Bioenergetics and Neurogeneration Group at iMed.ULisboa, where she aims to clarify the regenerative role of neural stem cells throughout adult life. Her scientific activity was initiated with the study of biochemical and regulatory pathways of programmed cell death in both hepatic and neural cells. Then, with a strong background in cell fate functional studies, she decided to move for the emerging area of neural stem cells biology. Solá has been dedicated in understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in neural stem cell fate, using in vitro and in vivo models, and identifying potential checkpoints and promising molecules that increase the activity of these cells during neuroregeneration. Recently, she has been interested in exploring the relevance of metabolism in inter-organ communication to improve the long-life activity of neural stem cells and, ultimately, ameliorate neuroplasticity in adulthood. Solá´s work granted her several important distinctions, including the Award of the Programa Gulbenkian de Estímulo à Investigação 2005 by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, the Medal of Honour LOréal Portugal 2008 for Women in Science by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), LOréal Portugal and the Portuguese National UNESCO Commission (CNU) and the Honourable Mention at 10th Edition of Crioestaminal Award in Biomedicine, by Crioestaminal and Associação Viver a Ciência. Solá is also member of Scientific Societies and European Consortiums, e.g. Member of Governing Board of the Mind-Brain College of Universidade de Lisboa and the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies; the International Society for Stem Cell Research; and COST Actions, actively committed in knowledge transfer strategies between scientific and medical communities. In Academia, Solá is the Coordinator of the Doctoral Course on Stem Cell Technologies (since 2019), Regent of several disciplines of the 2nd and 3rd cycle of studies at FFUL, also participating in other Doctoral/Master Programs outside FFUL.
