David Botequim works as a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Instituto de Medicina Molecular João Lobo Antunes in Paulo Filipe Lab (Dermatology Investigation Unit), in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine of Lisbon and the Dermatology Department of Hospital de Santa Maria. He is involved in several projects, focusing on finding solutions/treatments for diseases such as psoriasis, and non-melanoma cutaneous cancers, as well as performing photobiological studies for the identification of photoproducts of drugs used in the skin. He is also Chief Medical Officer of Acie (USA), addressing skin impedance biosensors and skin cancer diagnostics. He completed his Ph.D. in Biotechnology and Biosciences at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), from the University of Lisbon in November 2020. His research activity was in the fields of nanotechnology, nanosciences, and nanomedicine, where he developed nanomaterials and nanoprobes for the biosensing of disease biomarkers. His first research experience was on chitosan-based nanofibers for his master's thesis for the Integrated Master's degree on Biomedical Engineering at the NOVA School of Science and Technology (FCT NOVA). After, he worked in silica nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes, from their chemical modification and characterization until their application as antimicrobial, antifungal, and antiviral platforms. The work was performed as an Assistant Researcher at Matera Lda (Biocant Park). Then he did a post-graduation on Advanced Studies in Bioengineering from the MIT Portugal Program. Afterward, he worked as a Research Fellow at Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE) and Instituto de Bioengenharia e Biociências (iBB), both of IST. He researched gold particle nano-assemblies capable of single protein detection by optical microscopy. In particular, he specialized in the functionalization of gold nanoparticles with oligonucleotides for particle self-assembly and used this approach to produce nanodimers that work as optical antennas for fluorescence enhancement of molecular dyes. His research during the Ph.D., in the scope of the BIOTECnico Ph.D. program, was mainly dedicated to the functionalization of gold nanoparticles with fluorescent DNA probes to develop fluorescence-based biosensors. In particular, gold nanoparticles as optical antennas to amplify fluorescence signals in the detection of nucleic acids were proposed as disease biomarkers. The research was also focused on other areas, such as i) molecular beacon probes conjugation onto gold nanorods; ii) functionalization of gold nanorods and gold-coated silver nanotriangles with dye-labeled oligonucleotides for plasmon-enhanced fluorescence purposes; iii) site-selective functionalization of gold nanorods; iv) synthesis and characterization of metallic nanoparticles. He has already collaborated with multicultural and multidisciplinary teams of reference at the National and International levels in the topics of study, being a visitor Ph.D. researcher at the Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands). His main scientific contributions have been included in the framework of several scientific projects (4 National), in the dissemination at almost 30 National and International scientific conferences, and publications in high-impact journals as an author and co-author of 10 articles. He also shares the invention of a patent (Antimicrobial Complexes) granted Worldwide.
