Nuno Silvestre is Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal. His research focuses on three main areas: (i) computational methods for the analysis of thin-walled and lightweight structures, (ii) analytical tools for the design of composite structures, and (iii) computational simulation of nanostructures and nanocomposites. He is internationally recognized for his pioneering work on the Generalized Beam Theory (GBT) applied to thin-walled structures and for his contributions to the modelling and mechanical characterization of advanced nanocomposites. He has published around 300 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, co-edited several books, and delivered over 400 presentations at international conferences. His scientific work has received broad recognition, with an h-index of 49. Since 2018, Professor Silvestre has served as Editor-in-Chief of Thin-Walled Structures (Elsevier). He has also held editorial roles in Data in Brief and Nanomaterials and Nanotechnology, and participates in several editorial boards of international journals. Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards, including the Vinnakota Award (2004), the IJSSD Award (2007), the Ferry Borges Award (2008), and the Santander Totta–UTL Award (2011), among others. He recently served as President of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering (IDMEC) and Vice-President of the Associated Laboratory for Energy, Transportation and Aeronautics (LAETA). Currently, he is a full member of the General Council of the University of Lisbon. Outside academia, his passions include gardening, collecting rare plants, painting, and enjoying life.
