- João C.C. Abrantes (born 1964) is an Associate Professor with Habilitation in Materials Science and Engineering, Director of proMetheus - Research Unit on Materials, Energy and Environment for Sustainability, at the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. - João made all academic graduation at the Ceramic and Materials Department of the University of Aveiro, having concluded his PhD in 2011, working on materials for application on oxygen sensors and solid oxide fuel cells. - He has published more than 90 scientific papers (h-index 24), and 1 patent application, and given over 40 talks at international conferences. He has supervised several MSc and PhD students, and participated in more than 10 research projects supported by the Portuguese Scientific Council. SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS - For 20 years João has been interested in the synthesis and characterization of ceramic materials for high-temperature electrochemical applications, such as solid oxide fuel cells, oxygen sensors, and membranes. More recently, he started his interest in cellular ceramics for multipurpose applications, in particular on phase change materials for thermal energy storage. - João is particularly strong in defect chemistry modelling of the high-temperature electrical conductivity behaviour of ceramic electrolytes and semiconductors and in impedance spectroscopy analysis of polycrystalline ceramics. ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES Since 1991, João has participated in the creation of several higher education courses (graduation and post-graduation), including Ceramics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, as well as collaborating on courses on Renewable Energy Engineering and Product Design. In these courses, his teaching collaboration was focused on Materials Science, Materials in Energy Conversion Systems and Energy Efficiency in Industry.
