Vincent Laizé is a researcher at the Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) and a principal investigator in the Comparative, adaptive and functional skeletal biology lab (BIOSKEL) since 2000. He is also an active member of the CIMAR associated laboratory (since 2002) and the S2AQUA collaborative laboratory (since 2021). He has a Master of Science in Biological Engineering (1993, Polytech Clermont-Ferrand, France) and a PhD in Molecular Biophysics (1998, Sorbonne Université, Paris, France). His current field of research is Life Science with a primary focus on Developmental and Evolutionary Fish Biology applied to bone development and mineralization and a secondary focus on Biotechnology applied to the discovery of bone anabolic compounds. VL participated in the development of several in vitro cell systems and in vivo assays that were used to uncover cellular and molecular mechanisms of bone formation and regeneration but also bone matrix mineralization in zebrafish and farmed fish. Recently these tools were applied to the screening of natural extracts (e.g. from seaweeds and microalgae) to discover osteoactive compounds that could serve as the next generation therapeutics against skeletal disorders such as osteoporosis. VL has recently started a new line of research at the CCMAR/S2AQUA aiming to establish novel resources (cell lines and animal serum-free medium formulations) for the sustainable development of the cellular aquaculture (the production of seafood from cells instead of marine animals). VL has published 87 articles in peer-reviewed journals and 7 book chapters and has supervised/co-supervised 4 postdoctoral works, 7 PhD thesis, 12 MSc thesis and 43 undergraduate students. He is a regular reviewer for >30 peer-reviewed journals, an academic editor for Applied Sciences, Toxics and Frontiers in Genetics, a special issue editor for the Journal of Applied Ichthyology and Toxics, and a reviewer for science funding agencies from Italy (PNRA), Belgium (FNRS), France (ANR) and Canada (NSERC). He has participated in 46 research/network projects (13 as coordinator or co-coordinator), is an inventor in 2 active patents and 10 patent applications and was the co-founder of Technozeb, a Business Unit of Technophage SA involved in the discovery of molecules with therapeutic interest using zebrafish. He has organized/co-organized 15 events (conferences, workshops and training schools) and has received 6 awards and/or honors.
