Inês Pereira dos Santos holds a PhD in Biomedical Engineering by Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam (The Netherlands), concluded in 2018. Currently, she is a contracted researcher at the Molecular Physical-Chemistry R&D Unit of the University of Coimbra (QFM-UC). IPS has expertise in Biomedical Engineering with emphasis on Raman spectroscopy for medical applications (development of Raman spectroscopy instruments for early cancer diagnosis). She has published 21 articles in journals with peer review with a total of 319 citations and H-index of 9. Her main focus is on the application of Raman and infrared spectroscopies for cancer diagnosis. She is currently co-supervising one PhD student on breast cancer diagnosis by Raman and FTIR spectroscopies and tutoring another PhD student on cervical cancer diagnosis by Raman spectroscopy. She is presently is member and participates in two funded R&D Projects VIBSonCANCER/Centro-01-0145-FEDER-029956 and PineWALL/PTDC/ASP-SIL/3142/2020. She is belongs to the Clinical Infrared and Raman Spectroscopy for Medical Diagnosis (CLIRSPEC), as well as to SPIE (International Society for Optics and Photonics) and to NeMPo Association (Neutrons & Muons in Portugal). The scientific research that IPS has conducted over the past eight years was based on the translational research of Raman spectroscopy into the clinical practice, development of Raman spectroscopy instrumentation, photonics, clinical studies in human tissue, software development, multivariate data analysis and development of diagnostic algorithms. Her scientific experience consubstantiated and was aimed at: (i) understanding and identifying an effective clinical need, also aided by her additional 8-year professional experience as registered nurse and (ii) developing a Raman spectroscopy-based technology, as well as research methods to translate it into the clinical practice. In her research, these two concepts are recursively articulated, and refer to medical applications aiming the improvement of early clinical diagnosis of cancer. Recently, she was invited to integrate the COST Action proposal "Engineering novel 3D organotypic skin models". She has established several collaborations with national and international R&D groups.
