Francisco Salzedas, obtained the degrees Licenciatura and Master in Physics from the University of Coimbra, at the Physics Department. He obtained the PhD in Physics from the University of Utrecht, in the Netherlands. He is now Associate Professor at University of Porto at the Faculty of Engineering (FEUP) and integrated researcher at Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear (IPFN) from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Lisbon. His research in hot plasma physics for controlled nuclear fusion, has been carried out in collaboration with DIFFER (ex FOM-Rijnhuizen) in the Netherlands; Max Planck Institute for Plasma Physics, Garching, in Germany, Physics Institute at University of São Paulo, in Brasil; Institute of Plasma Physics of the Czech Academie of Sciences (Prague), in the Czech Republic; Joint European Torus, Culham, in the United Kingdom. With his research, he seeks to contribute to develop the technology that allows humankind to access the abundant, clean and safe source of energy released in the fusion of light nuclei. This is the natural source of the energy radiated by the Sun that has powered Life on Earth since its beginning. Mastery of this technology will lead humankind into a new era that will allow it to maintain development, independently of the nefarious fossil fuels. His research interests in tokamak plasma physics are in MHD, MHD instabilities, energy confinement disruption, transport, plasma rotation.
