Diogo Coelho (DC) is a Geneticist and Biotechnologist with a PhD in Veterinary Sciences with specialization in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (2022, University of Lisbon). He is currently an Invited Auxiliary Researcher at the Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology, University of Minho in the scope of the project "Blue Bioeconomy Pact". DC has published 27 peer-reviewed articles, 5 book chapters and 2 provisional patents. He has supervised one BSc student project and co-supervised four additional BSc projects. Currently, he is co-supervising an MSc thesis and one BSc project. He has also served as a principal jury member for three MSc thesis defenses, five BSc project defenses, and has participated in teaching activities in both BSc (Applied Biology) and MSc (Molecular Genetics and Applied Biochemistry) courses. He has presented at several scientific conferences, and prepared and presented numerous outreach activities for various audiences, both the general public of all ages, and scientists. He regularly acts as peer reviewer for international scientific journals and has organised and presented scientific workshops and conferences and student mentoring activities. Furthermore, he has been interviewed in the scope of "Protocol spotlight by protocols.io", and received 2 awards recognising his scientific studies. He has mainly worked in the area of Veterinary and Natural sciences with an emphasis on Biological Sciences, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Pharmacology. During his PhD he developed new enzymatic approaches (mainly with CAZymes), for the disruption of micro and macroalgae cell walls and their subsequent incorporation in pig and poultry diets to improve the algae nutritional value, feed efficiency and animal meat quality. Namely, he developed a new screening platform using in vitro methodologies for the rapid screening of large numbers of enzymes for the identification of those effective in algae hydrolysis. Thereby, numerous different enzyme mixes were identified for effective breakdown of various algae, with this work culminating in two provisional patent applications and 6 scientific publications. He also developed in vivo and in vitro assays to specifically assess the effects of various micro and macroalgae supplemented with the enzyme mixtures on animals, with a focus on parameters such as production performance, meat quality, blood markers, transcriptomic and proteomic profiles of liver and muscle tissues, and metabolic activity. This enabled identification of the specific effects of the different feeds on animals, interconnecting algae type, enzyme mix, and effect(s). Overall, this work showed the positive effects of using enzyme treated algae in animal feed and culminated in 18 further scientific publications in the area. During his first post-doctoral study (a short-term, 8 month project), he investigated the pharmacological properties of microalgae extracts obtained via mechanical and/or physical methods. This included investigation of the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of extracts as assessed by biochemical assays and determination of specific markers in cell cultures. Currently, he is involved in developing new biorefinery systems for the advanced processing of macroalgae biomass to various new value-added products, thereby permitting a multi-valorisation of marine biomass. The main goal is to develop and optimise environmentally friendly methods for the extraction of multiple high value compounds from algae, and he has already identified a simplified, low cost, environmentally friendly methods for extraction of both xylan and protein with high yields and purity (~90%) of each. He is also conducting kinetic studies with different endoxylanases using Palmaria palmata xylan, assessing their activity under varying temperatures and hydrolysis conditions to support the biorefinery strategy towards producing high-value xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) with potential bioactive properties.
