Nicola Gambardella is a research assistant at CIIMAR (Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental), a research institute affiliated with the University of Porto. His current work implies the analysis of microbial communities in permafrost environments, with a primary emphasis on identifying microorganisms involved in dimethylation and mercury reduction processes. Nicola conducted research in Portugal for six months as part of his master's thesis, granted by the European educational initiative "Erasmus+ Internship," which champions international mobility. Nicola is also active in the dissemination of scientific knowledge, as he participated in projects that facilitated engagement with high school students by showcasing the activities conducted in the laboratory (OCEAN3R). He obtained his bachelor's degree in Molecular Biology at the University of Padua in 2021 and his master's degree in Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics at the same university in 2023. He committed to several workshops about remote sensing and data management and followed the courses to increase his coding skills, both in Python and R. Together and complementary with computational analysis, Nicola also participated in field work within different sampling campaigns in various locations, such as the Lima River and the Atlantic Ocean, contributing to the collection of material for the ATLANTIDA project.

2023/05/24 - 2023/05/24 On May 24th 2023, OCEAN3R organized a visit to CIIMAR of 50 students from João Gonçalves Zarco Secondary School (10th grade). Students had the opportunity to accompany the young CIIMAR research team with several activities organized under the OCEAN3R project. They got involved with different problematics facing marine ecosystem such as microplastics monitoring, microbial, microbial bioremediation, kelp forest kelp forest recovery& sustainable aquaculture sustainable! 2024/03/04 - 2024/03/08 The workshop covered a range of quantitative studies in ecology made possible by the extensive Tara Oceans datasets, which comprise DNA sequence and organism imaging resources from all domains of plankton life including viruses, as well as rich metadata to explore their environmental context. Participants learned to use these resources for exploring contributions of plankton to ecological, evolutionary and biogeochemical processes, aiming to provide the predictive power needed to track the impact of climate change on life in the oceans.

2023/12/22 - 2023/12/22 Unlocking the immense potential of Earth Observation and modelling data on a global scale is a powerful resource for addressing societal needs and fostering science diplomacy. However, navigating this data-rich landscape comes with its own set of challenges, including barriers to data selection, discovery and access, or a correct understanding of the fitness for use of each product. We explored the methodologies and opportunities for utilizing global products—both satellite and model-based—for local, high-impact applications.

2023/05/10 - 2023/05/12 The U.Porto Young Research Meeting – IJUP, is an annual event, which takes place at the beginning of the second semester, and where U.Porto students (and affiliated students as well), have the opportunity to present and discuss the results of the studies in which they participated in the scope of initiation research projects. The research initiation program aims to encourage the involvement of U.Porto students in R&D activities, as early as possible, in their university education.
