Valerio Simoni graduated in Social Anthropology at the University of Neuchâtel (2004, Switzerland) and holds a PhD from Leeds Metropolitan University (2009, UK). He has been Postdoctoral Fellow at the Centre for Research in Anthropology (2010-2014, Portugal) and Research Fellow at the Geneva Graduate Institute (2014-2017, Switzerland), where he is currently Visiting Professor, Senior Researcher, and Principal Investigator of an ERC Starting Grant project (2018-2023). Author of the award-winning monograph 'Tourism and Informal Encounters in Cuba' (Berghahn 2016), he has published extensively in the fields of anthropology, migration, and tourism studies. Drawing on long-term ethnographic research in Latin America and Southern Europe, his work focuses on situations marked by cross-border mobilities and addresses processes of social transformation with a special interest in the study of ethics, intimacy, economic practice, politicization, digital media, transnationalism, and globalization.
