Francisco C. Cotta is an Electrical and Electronics engineer, currently developing his PhD research in Sustainable Energy Systems at the Bioelectronics & Bioenergy Research Lab at CFE - Centre for Functional Ecology, Department of Life Sciences of the University of Coimbra. His research focuses on the development of bioelectronic devices for recording and modulating cell-cell communication, in the framework of the GREEN project - generating energy from electroactive algae. Francisco is working on the optimization of fabrication methods and electrical characterization of multi-electrode arrays (MEAs) coated with conductive polymers such as PEDOT:PSS and carbon nanotubes. He presently works with electronic materials aimed to be used for cell deposition for bioelectronic studies. His work intersects with biological methodologies such as biocompatibility assays of the coated devices and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy recordings of cell-MEA systems. Francisco has experience in extracellular recordings of signals produced by cell cohorts plated on low impedance electrodes, with state-of-the-art low signal-to-noise ratio instrumentation and custom aquisition software. Before engaging into research activity, Francisco worked as an electrotechnical engineer, responsible for reports and designing projects for electric surge and lightning protection systems in companies. Shortly after his graduation, Francisco engaged in a short-term internship in Cairo, Egypt, in the company Solar rings, already aligned with his interest in renewable energy sources.
