I have a degree in Biology Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2003) and worked for a few years at the National Institute for Sea and Atmospheric Research at the Heavy Metals contamination lab. II have a PhD in Pharmacy (specialization in Toxicology) at the Faculty of Pharmacy University of Lisbon (FFUL) (2012). Afterwards, I was awarded a Post-Doc Fellowship from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia to study the interaction between mercury compounds and the thioredoxin system, namely to understand if this event was related to the unfolding of cell death at the Research Institute for Medicines (iMed.ULisboa). This project involved a collaboration with Professor Arne Holmgren, at the Division of Biochemistry, Department of Molecular Biochemistry and Biophysics, Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm where I took a secondment in 2015. Following a the post doc I took a researcher position at FFUL . Since 2010, I've been enrolled in teaching duties at FFUL in Toxicology related courses, and I have collaborated in Biochemistry, Toxicology and Risk Assessment courses at other Higher Education institutions and I have supervised students of all graduation levels and between 2022 and 2023 I was an Assistant Professor at the Egas Moniz School of Health and Science. Since January 2024 I am an Assistant Professor of Toxicology at FFUL and I am seeking to establish and independent research line spanning 3 main areas: i) evaluation of methyl mercury interaction with selenoproteins towards risk mitigation; ii) nanoplastic toxicology; iii) toxicology of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon mixtures. I have established a network including researchers from Sweden (Lucia Coppo, Karolinska Institute), the US (Prof. Michael Aschner, Albert Einstein College of Medicine), Brazil (Prof. João Rocha, Federal University of Santa Maria, and Prof. Marcelo Farina, Federal University of Santa Catarina), China (Dr. Jun Lu, Southwest University) and Portugal (Marta Martins, Faculty of Sciences and Technology New University of Lisbon). Throughout my career I collaborated in several research projects, and supervised several students (undergrad, MSc, PhD). Up-to-date (March 2024), I am author in 44 original peer reviewed publications and presented several oral and poster communications in conferences and seminars. I have a post-graduation in Science Communication (Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, New University of Lisbon, 2017) and another in Higher Education Pedagogy. I am certified Laboratory Animal Science researcher (FELASA Category B).
