Miguel Santos obtained his degree in Biology by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto, in 1994. In 2002 he obtained his PhD in Biology by the University of Porto, with a joint supervision between the Faculty of Sciences (FCUP) and the Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ). During his PhD, he studied the ecotoxicological effects and the mode of action (MoA) of organotins in molluscs. In addition to FCUP and NIOZ, part of his PhD thesis was performed in Barcelona (ICD-CSIC) and at the University of Hulva, Spain. Between 2002/2003 he engaged in a Post-Doc in the Department of Environmental Chemistry of the ICD-CSIC in Barcelona and in the University of Porto, FCUP / CIIMAR. He joined the Interdisciplinary Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIIMAR) as an Auxiliary Researcher in 2003. In 2011 he started a collaboration with the Department of Biology of FCUP, as an invited Professor (25%). Since September 2016 he is a full-time Professor at FCUP. In July 2013 he established his research group at CIIMAR- Endocrine Disrupters and Emergent Contaminants Group - EDEC. EDEC integrates at the moment approximately 20 elements (8 PhD holders, 4 PhD students as main supervisors). EDEC uses a holistic approach combining expertise in molecular biology and evolution, bioinformatics, biochemistry, endocrinology, ecological modeling, behavior ecology and Ecotoxicology. Linking adverse-effects endpoints of EDCs and EPs with the chemical's mode of action is transversal to all themes. The central aim is to improve environmental and ecological hazard and risk assessment of endocrine disrupting chemicals and emerging pollutants in aquatic ecosystems, while at the same time developing new tools to assess their effects. EDEC holds regular meetings and a very enthusiastic atmosphere. He authored or co-authored approximatly 160 articles in indexed international journals since he finalized his PhD in 2002. From 2002 his H index is 38 (Scopus). Over 85 % of his publications are in Q1 journals. Between 2008 and 2019 he supervised or co-supervised 8 PhD students, all finished their studies successfully. He currently supervises (4) and co-supervises (2) PhD students. He supervised the studies of 12 Postdoctoral researchers/Auxiliary researchers. From 1993 he has been lecturing at different educational levels, initially as a high school professor (1993-1998). He has also been involved in lecturing several post-graduation courses for high school teachers. Latter, when he started his researcher position at CIIMAR, he has lectured in the Master course of "Ciências do Mar e Recursos Marinhos" and the PhD program on Marine and Environmental Sciences (CIIMAR/UP). From 2011 to 2016, as an invited professor at the Dep. of Biology of FCUP, he has lectured the curricular units of "Toxicologia Geral, Genética Molecular e Citogenética, Biologia Celular e Molecular, Biologia Humana, Ecotoxicologia, Biologia dos invertebrados, Ecologia Marinha". Since he started his current full-time professor position at FCUP (2016), he lectured: Toxicologia Geral; Gestão de Recursos Naturais, Ecologia, Genética Molecular e Citogenética, Biologia do Desenvolvimento, Ecotoxicologia (master), Ferramentas Moleculares Aplicadas à Biologia Aquática (master). He has been actively involved in science outreach, which included the coordination of the Center of monitoring and environmental interpretation of Vila do Conde (CMIA Vila do Conde) bettwen 2010 and 2013, and was a member of CIIMAR directory board between 2013 and 2019. Since December 2022 he is the Sub-Dean of the Department of Biology, Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto.
