Casimiro Pio is a full professor of Applied Environmental Sciences, since 1993, at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. With a background in Chemical Engineering, obtained is PhD in 1981, in Environmental Sciences, at the University of Lancaster, UK. As a teacher at the University, he organized courses in Pollution and Environmental Sciences, participating in the establishment of the first course in Environmental Engineering in Portugal. In these and other courses, taught undergraduate master and PhD students in Analytical Methodologies, Chemical and Atmospheric Thermodynamics, Atmospheric Chemistry and Air Pollution and Quality. As a researcher, he has been working for approximately four decades in the field of environment, with special emphasis on atmospheric sciences and air pollution. He was one of the first researchers in Europe to develop methodologies and building equipment for the measurement of carbonaceous aerosols in the atmosphere, using thermo-optical methods. He was also one of the European researcher precursors in the application of source apportionment computing methodologies to apportion the formation processes and sources of atmospheric aerosols. He also developed research in subjects such as: physico-chemical properties of atmospheric aerosols; natural gaseous sulphur atmospheric compounds; volatile ammonium aerosols; emission of hydrocarbons by vegetation; sea breezes and coastal air quality; deposition fluxes of pollutants over vegetation; energy and CO2 fluxes at the boundary layer in rural and urban environments; industrial and indoor pollution; emission of pollutants by biomass burning; urban, rural and desert dust. In these areas, he has been a principal investigator, or coordinator, of several dozens national and international research projects. He supervised with success 20 PhD students and published approximately two hundred scientific papers, which had more than eleven thousand citations, resulting in a h index of 58. In scientific and academic administration, he was director of the Department of Environment during several years, member and adjunct president of the University Scientific Council. He founded and directed CESAM (Centre for Environmental and Marine Sciences), the larger research Unit in the University of Aveiro, with more than 200 PhD holding researchers, for 16 years, until 2017. Since December 2019 he is retired from teaching.

  1. Temporal patterns and trends of particulate matter over Portugal: a long-term analysis of background concentrations. Air quality management regarding PM concentrations in the atmosphere is a complex problem to tackle. In this paper, we aim to characterize the temporal patterns and trends of aerosol background levels over Portugal. Hourly data from the national air quality monitoring network, gathered from 2007 to 2016, is analyzed using statistical methods. Data from 20 monitoring stations was processed to prepa. 2018. 2. Road tunnel, roadside, and urban background measurements of aliphatic compounds in size-segregated particulate matter. Particulate matter samples were collected in a road tunnel in Lisbon (PM0.5, PM0.5-1, PM1-2.5, and PM2.5-10) and at two urban locations representing roadside and background stations (PM2.5 and PM2.5-10). Samples were analysed for organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), n-alkanes, n-alkenes, hopanes, some isoprenoid compounds, and steranes. Particulate matter concentrations in the tunnel were 17-. 2016. 3. Size-segregated particulate matter and gaseous emissions from motor vehicles in a road tunnel. In order to address road traffic emissions, studies need to be performed under realistic driving conditionswhere the input fromother sources isminimised.Measurements in traffic tunnels have been used for quantifying emissions, but so far no study has established emission factors (EFs) for Southern Europe. To fill this gap, a sampling campaign was carried out for one week in the Liberdade Avenue tu. 2015. 4. Elements and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in exhaust particles emitted by light-duty vehicles. The main purpose of this work was to evaluate the chemical composition of particulate matter (PM) emitted by eight different light-duty vehicles. Exhaust samples from petrol and diesel cars (Euro 3 to Euro 5) were collected in a chassis dynamometer facility. To simulate the real-world driving conditions, three ARTEMIS cycles were followed: road, to simulate a fluid traffic flow and urban with hot. 2015. Anthropogenic changes to land cover (LCC) remain common, but continuing land scarcity promotes the widespread intensification of land management changes (LMC) to better satisfy societal demand for food, fibre, fuel and shelter1. The biophysical effects of LCC on surface climate are largely understood2,3,4,5, particularly for the boreal6 and tropical zones7, but fewer studies have investigated the. 2014. The two-component model (Fialho et al., 2006) was used to decouple the contributions of black carbon (BC) and iron oxides, present in dust, to the aerosol attenuation coefficient, measured with a multiwavelength Aethalometer.
