Andreia Sofia Faria Pereira is a postdoctoral researcher in Gulbenkian Instituto de Medicina Molecular, University of Lisbon, in Mitochondrial Biology and Neurodegeneration lab, led by Dr. Vanessa A. Morais. Currently, she is dedicated to unveil the role of peroxisomes in mitochondrial diseases. In 2023, she was a visiting Researcher in University of Exeter- School of Biosciences, at Prof. Michael Shrader's lab - an expert on mammalian peroxisomal biology, where she acquired scientific and technical expertise on peroxisomal biology. She is currently the PI and co-PI of 2 R&D projects: “FCT Exploratory Project” (PO4MITO) and “Bolsa SPDM de apoio à investigação Dr. Aguinaldo Cabral”, respectively. In 2022, she completed her PhD, supervised by Dr. Vanessa A. Morais, entitled "Unravelling the specific role of synaptic mitochondria" at iMM and Faculty of Medicine, University of Lisbon with the highest honors. She completed her Master degree in Molecular Biology and Genetics in 2015 by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. She completed her Bachelor degree in Biology in 2013 by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Porto. During her scientific path, Andreia has gained expertise in several cellular, molecular and mitochondrial approaches including imunoblot, imunofluorescence of fixed and live samples, O2 consumption, metabolic and in-gel activity assays. Currently, she authors 6 articles in international peer-reviewed journals. She has received 7 awards and/or honors, including an EMBO Scientific Exhange Grant, in 2023, aimed to fund her research vist to Prof. Michael Schrader's lab, in the UK. Andreia has mentored 17 rotational master and undergraduate students from different scientific backgrounds and she is currently the co-supervisor of a master student. Since July 2024, as an ASAPbio Cell Biology crowd member, she has contributed to open science with the revision of 1 paper and 3 preprints. Since 2018, she has been actively engaged in scientific dissemination events such as the European Researchers' Night and Soapbox Science Lisbon.
