Paloma Gonçalves is a PhD student in the HIV evolution, epidemiology and prevention research group at iMed.ULisboa, Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa. She started her academic training back in 2015 at NOVA School of Science and Technology, where she graduated in biochemistry. In 2021, Paloma successfully completed her MSc in Biomedical Sciences at Instituto de Higiene e Medicina Tropical, for which she was recognized with the Scholarly and Scientific Merit Award Professor Doutor Manuel Pinto as the best Master student in the field. After finishing her academic training, she was selected for a fellowship at Faculty of Pharmacy (Lisbon) to work on a project called "Epidemiology, drug resistance and pathogenesis of HIV in Cape Verde: The Cape Verde HIV Cohort". Throughout her work, she acquired experience in a wide range of molecular biology techniques and bioinformatics tools used in the field of phylogenetic analysis, phylodynamics and evolution of RNA viruses; immunological assays, cell culture models and viral infection. In 2022, she was awarded a PhD fellowship from Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia. Her project focuses on the development of new spiro-ß-lactams as broad-spectrum host-directed drugs against RNA viruses. At the same time, she is integrated in a parallel project on drug resistance in neonates born from HIV-infected mothers in Tanzania and Mozambique. Paloma's work has been presented in six posters and one oral communication at national and international meetings and congresses. Moreover, the results of her work have been published in two scientific articles as co-author (Microbiology spectrum journal and International Journal of Molecular Sciences) and one as first author (AIDS journal).
