Nuno Alexandre Faria has a degree in Biologia Microbiana e Genética, by Faculdade de Ciência, Universida de Lisboa, in 2002.
He continue his studies and obtain his PhD degree through the ITQB PhD Program in Chemical and Biological Sciences, in 2009,
at Instituto de Tecnologia Química e Biológica, Universidade Nova de Lisboa .
After the PhD he continues his scientific research as a Postdoctoral fellow, and later as researcher, where he addressed antibiotic
resistance, epidemiology and evolutionary mechanisms of gram-positive and gram-negative human pathogens. His previous studies
have been focused on Staphylococcus aureus and other staphylococci, gathering information on the clonal evolution and relationship
between nosocomial and community environments.
In order to extend and strength the knowledge in this field, he expand to gram-negative bacteria, mainly carbapenemase resistant
Klebsiella pneumonia, where he focus their resistance mechanisms, epidemiology and clonal evolution in the hospital setting.
Furthermore, the environment where these bacteria live and evolve is so diverse and complex that understanding the role of
microbiome in the epidemiology of nosocomial infection, as well as the interactions between host microbiome and nosocomial
environment, is also one of the area of interest, as it represents key factors in the development in infection control strategies.
The establishment of relationship between nosocomial and community pathogens and environmental isolates will allow a better
understanding of bacterial population dynamics, as also their role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance.
For the achievements of these goals he develops interest and acquire competence with whole genome sequencing (WGS), and respective
analysis, as these technologies provide a deeper and comprehensive analysis of such populations and genetic determinants.
WGS is now a regular and major tool for its research.
N. A. Faria has published 19 papers in peer-reviewed journals that comprise 683 citations and an h-index of 11: he is corresponding
author in one.. In the last 5 years he was invited to one (1) oral communications (n=8), and was involved in several poster
communications (n=12). Since 2012, he has been parte of research team in several national and international funding research
projects. During this period, he was involved in the co-supervision of six (6) students (PhD=1, Master=2, undergraduate=3).
Additionally, N. A. Faria has been as well involved in organisation of one international meeting (IX IMMEM), in S. aureus
MLST database curation, participation in the jury panel of international grants and abstracts. Also, he has been involved
in academic activities: one 1 Master programs, both in theoretical and practical classes, and as principal examiner of four
(4) Master thesis.
